处所功能

（一）在 bed, church, college, court, hospital, market, office, prison, sea , school, table 等名词之前，如果带定冠词或不定冠词则表示各该名词所表示的处所；若带零冠词，则表示各该处所的功能。
Before the war there used to be a school in the village. 还没有打仗的时候，曾经有所学校在这村子里。
The boy is old enough for school. 这孩子大了，可以上学了。
When we got to the church, the wedding ceremony had already begun.

当我们到达教堂时，婚礼已经开始了。
He is in / at church. 他在做礼拜。
You should tell the court all you know. 你应该向法庭讲出所有你知道的事情。
She had to appear in court to give evidence 她不得不出庭作证。
When I saw him, he was dozing at the table. 我看见他时，他正打盹在桌子边。
They were at table (在用餐） when we called. 他们在吃饭，正好我们拨了电话。
It is a city on the sea (= at the seaside). 这城市是一座海上。
He wanted very much to go to sea(= be a sailor). 他非常想出海（当海员）。

（二）在某些与动词同形的名词之前用定冠词可表示一种相关的运动状态。
The number of students in this school has been constantly on the increase.

从数量上讲，读书来这个学校读书的，一直在增加。
Don't jump off the train when it is on the move (在开动）．不要跳下来，火车还在运行。
The criminal is on the run (在逃） from the police. 罪犯还在逃。
We have been on the go (忙碌） all day. 我们奔波了一整天。
A taxi driver came to the / his rescue (来营救） and took him to hospital.

一个出租车司机来救他，送他去了医院。
