3, 冠词的其他用法
在由两个名词构成的并列对称结构中，名词之前一般都带零冠词。
He could hardly keep body and soul together. (他很难确保避免魂不附体。）
They have lived as husband and wife for years. 他们生活在一起，夫妻好多年了。
He stood firm and unflinching for King and Country. 他坚定不移地支持国王和国家。

Crown or Parliament — that was the choice. 王冠或者议会，是面临的选择。
The whole trip was a disaster from beginning to end. 整个旅程是一场灾难，彻头彻尾都是。

He was searched by the police from top to toe. 他被搜身，警察搜的，从头到脚。
The climate in Chile varies greatly from north to south. (气候，在智利差异很大，从南到北。）
His income is barely enough for him to live from hand to mouth. 他的收入仅够糊口。
This farm has been handed down from father to son since 1800.

这个衣场代代相传至今，始于1800年。
The differentiation of past, present, and future is absent from many of these verbs.

区分过去、现在和将来没办法做到的有很多这样的动词。
类似的结构还有 arm in arm, hand in hand, day after day, day by day, face to face, heart and soul, side by side, step by step , from time to time, time after time , time and time again 等。
在某些介词词组中，作为介词补足成分的名词词组可以带定冠词，也可带零冠词：带定冠词通常表示名词的本义；若带零冠词则表示比喻或转义。

He is a good man at bottom. 他有善良人的本质。
Who knows what will happen in the future? 谁知道有什么事情还会发生？
Please be punctual in future(= from now on). (今后要守时。）
The moon goes round the earth. 月亮围绕着地球。
What on earth are you doing? (你到底在做什么？）什么事情竟会让你如此忙？
My house is at the end of the lane. 我的房子在最里头，走这条小巷子。
They argued for three hours on end. (他们辩论了三小时没停。）
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. 一只鸟在手值得两只鸟林中走。
There are restaurants close at hand. 有餐馆在附近。
There is a church at the top of the hill. 有一座教堂在山顶。
Put this record on top of the others. (这张唱片下面放其他唱片。）
On top of (= In addition to) borrowing $500, he asked me to lend him my car.

除了借500美元，还有要我借他一用的小汽车。
She paints after / in the fashion of Picasso. 她作画时仿照的绘画风格是毕加索的。

Long skirts are now no longer in fashion. 长裙现在不时髦了。
There is a picture in the front of the book. (有一幅图画在书的封面上。）

He is serving at the front. (他的服役在前线。）
The children walked in twos with one teacher in front and one after.

孩子们行走两两成群，有一位老师带头，一位老师殿后。
Jobs are hard to find nowadays, but in the case of Mr Johnson, that's not the problem.

They are travelling to Britain by way of Paris.

In the sight of the world， they were a happily married couple.

如果看俗世，可知他们是对幸福的夫妻。
In 1945, when the final victory was in sight (在望）， we doubled our efforts to fight the Japs.

1945年，当最后的胜利在望时，我们加倍努力抗击日本侵略者。
