During the "Supporting Syria and the Region" conference held in London on 4 February, the EU and its Member States pledged more than €3 billion (RMB 36.75bn) to assist the Syrian people inside Syria, refugees and communities hosting them in neighbouring countries during 2016. In her speech, HRVP Federica Mogherini noted that "it is our collective responsibility to make today a day of hope as the Chancellor [Merkel] mentioned this morning, and to turn hope into reality. To bring peace in Syria and to rebuild the country. The EU is ready."

EU trade promotes human rights and sustainability in Mongolia
欧盟贸易政策促进蒙古可持续发展和人权保护

The European Commission published a package of reports on the GSP scheme on 28 January. Mongolia is a beneficiary of this EU special trade incentive arrangement, which offers lower duties for access to the EU market in return for the ratification and implementation of international conventions in the field of human and labour rights, sustainable development and good governance. Two years after joining the GSP , Mongolia has made overall progress but has persistent problems with meeting its corruption, labour and environment protection obligations.

EU plans public consultations over China market economy status

The EU will hold public consultations in the coming months to gather the opinions of industry and trade unions on China market economy status. "We will try to reach out to industry and trade unions in a more systematic way this spring with public consultations," EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said after meeting trade ministers from the EU's 28 members in Amsterdam. Malmström discussed the issue with the Parliament on 1 February, saying it was important to understand that the key question was not whether China was operating as a market economy - it was not, she said - but whether to change the way the EU handles trade complaints against it.

Workshop organized under the EU-China Social Protection Reform project

On 20 January, a workshop organized under the EU-China Social Protection Reform project (policy development component) concluded the plan of activities for the project's 1st year. Lars Gronvald, Head of Cooperation Section of the EU Delegation to China, and Pu Yufei, Director General of the Department of Employment and Income Distribution of the National Development and Reform Commission, stressed the importance of mutual exchanges for social security reform both in China and the EU Member States. Officials from Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Civil Affairs, national and international experts took part in the workshop.

Photo exhibition of European urban sculpture opens in Beijing
欧洲城市雕塑图片展在北京举行

On 1 February the opening ceremony of the The Immortals of a City, photo exhibition of urban sculpture was held at China World Mall Atrium in Beijing. The exhibition shows photographic works by Michele Stanzione, Alessandra Combatti, and Zeng Yi shot in 15 cities of 13 European countries, which were granted the title of “European capital of culture” from 1985 to 1999.
