The chart above shows clearly that the past two decades has seen a great change in demographic distribution in terms of Chinese rural and urban areas. Based on the chart, the total size of people living in cities is more than doubled, reaching approximately 670 million. Also, it’s hard to miss that Chinese people have become almost equally distributed, with rural population percentage being slightly higher.

While taking several major factors into careful account, few people would feel surprised at the fact demonstrated by the chart. To begin with, the widening gap of income levels encourages rising number of people from countryside to strive to make livings in cities. In addition, it’s common to see that majority of college graduates, both of country and city origins, tend to stay in big-sized or medium-sized cities to develop their careers. Also, in pursuit of economic development, the government has been developing large numbers of urban areas into cities and therefore multiply city identities.

In my eyes, it’s good to see that increasing people are able to getting the access to city services, including education, health care and so on. On the other hand, a comprehensive and thoughtful balance, between rural and city development, is supposed to well kept with an eye to long-term and sustainable social advance.
