4.      (Two different ways to learn: the American way) But the critical point was that, in the process, we were trying to teach Benjamin that one could solve a problem effectively by oneself.

1.      Can we gather, from the Chinese and American extremes, a superior way to approach education, perhaps striking a better balance between the poles of creativity and basic skills?

4. 段落结构理解

However, I do not want to overstate my case(对我们的教育方式大肆吹捧).

(因为)There is enormous creativity to be found in Chinese scientific, technological and artistic innovations past and present无论在过去还是当今,中国在……方面都展示出巨大的创造力.

(回过头来看)And there is a danger of exaggerating creative breakthroughs in the west(而西方的创新突破则有夸大其词的危险).

(事实上)When any innovation is examined closely如果仔细审视任何一项创新, it’s reliance on previous achievements is all too apparent(其对以往成就的依赖都是显而易见的)(the “standing on the shoulders of giants” phenomenon站在巨人肩膀之上的现象).

5. Analyze the sentence structure:

But assuming假设 that the contrast I have developed is valid, and that the fostering of skills and creativity are both worthwhile goals, the important question becomes this重要的问题就在于: Can we gather寻求, from the Chinese and American extremes, a superior way to approach education, perhaps striking a better balance between the poles of creativity and basic skills?

1.       value originality and independence more than the Chinese do

2.       contrast between our two cultures

3.       the fears that we both harbor

4.       Chinese teachers are fearful

5.       no comparable hurry to promote creativity

6.       unless creativity has been acquired early

7.       be picked up later

One way of  1. the American position is to  2.  that we value  3.   and independence more than the Chinese do. The contrast between our two cultures can also be seen in terms of the fears we both  4.  . Chinese teachers are  5.  that if skills are not acquired early, they may never be   6.  ; there is, on the other hand, no   7.  hurry to promote creativity. American educators fear that unless  8.  has been acquired early, it may never  9.  ; on the other hand, skills can be 10 . up later.

However, I do not want to  1.  my case. There is enormous creativity to be found in Chinese scientific, technological and artistic innovations past and present. And there is a danger of 2.  creative breakthroughs in the West. When any innovation is examined closely, its 3. on previous achievements is all too apparent (the “standing on the shoulders of giants” phenomenon).

But  4.  that the contrast I have developed is 5.  , and that the  6.  of skills and creativity are both  7.  goals, the important question becomes this: Can we  8.  , from the Chinese and American  9.  , a superior way to approach education, perhaps striking a better balance between the  10  of creativity and basic skills?

1.      summarizing  2 . state  3. originality  4. harbor  5. fearful

6.      acquired  7. comparable  8. creativity  9. emerge  10. picked

1.      overstate  2. exaggerating  3. reliance  4. assuming  5. valid

6.  fostering   7. worthwhile  8. gather   9. extremes   10. poles

7. Difficulty:

I came to realize that these Chinese were not just molding and shaping Benjamin’s performance in any old manner: In the best Chinese tradition, they were teaching by holding his hand, so much so that he would happily come back for more.

There is a contrast

III. After-reading one (for class room study)

After-reading two(for students’ self study after class)

1. Translate the sentence into English using the words or phrase we have just learned(to be checked in class)

Answers:

1.      In retrospect, I did not have the least idea to make an exception for you because you were superior to your brother in intelligence.

2.      The sharp contrast between your living standards and your brother’s will find its way into your father’s head in due course, and evolve into a top priority.

3.      On occasion, what seems initially irrelevant interpersonal relations may emerge as an enormous obstacle at some critical point.

4.      Your brother considers it a worthwhile task to summarize his own experiences, so much so that he never neglected making use of his past experiences to promote sales.

5.      Assuming that your brother’s customer exaggerated her initial psychological reaction, does it mean that he has the right to keep her waiting so long for him to make up for the compensation?

IV. Teacher’s remarks:

My dear students, if you find those above easy to comprehend and produce, it means you have made good use of text A unit 1 and improved your English language proficiency. Therefore you can be congratulated.

Not only understand (input) but also generate (output) similar sentences to express yourself well. Don’t stop just when you feel you can understand the text. The touchstone of your understanding is when you can fluently respond to questions with correct answers.

  3) The teacher-centered and the child directed approaches to teaching art represent two extremes of opinion. Too many teacher-directed activities cannot be expected to effectively assist children in learning because of the rigid structure. On the other hand, too many child-directed activities may see a curriculum that is totally unstructured and out of control. There are valid reasons to believe that a teacher-guided approach would be a superior way to guide children’s development. This approach combines some form of structure with the child leading the direction.

II. Translation:

I view it worthwhile trying to summarize our experience in learning English. Here I would like to make three relevant points.

First, wide reading should be taken as a priority in the learning process, because it is through reading that we get the most language input. Next, learning by heart as many well-written essays as possible is also very important. On the one hand, rote learning is indeed of little help, but on the other hand, learning by heart with a good understanding will certainly do good to us. With an enormous store of excellent essays in our heads, we will find it much easier to express ourselves in English. Finally, it is critical that we should put what we have learned into practice. By doing more reading, writing, listening and speaking, we will be able to accomplish the task of perfecting our English.

The previous lesson brushing up

1. Home work check on the translation of unit 1

I consider it worthwhile trying to summarize our experience in learning English. Here I’d like to make three relevant points.

First, wide reading should be taken as a priority in the learning process, because it is through reading that we get the most language input. Next, learning by heart as many well-written essays as possible is also important. On one hand, rote learning is indeed of little help, but on the other hand, memorization based on good understanding will certainly do good to us. With an enormous store of excellent essays in our mind, we will find it much easier to express ourselves in English. Finally, it is critical that we should put what we have learned into practice. By doing more reading, writing, listening and speaking, we will be able to accomplish the task of perfecting our English.
