台湾有好多原住民，他们大都是山地居民，人们习惯上把他们称作高山族。

这些原住民有九个民族，他们是雅美族、阿美族、泰雅族、赛夏族、邹族和邵族、布农族、卑南族、鲁凯族、排湾族（邹族和邵族被作为一个民族）。

台湾原住民现在大约有50多万人，主要居住在花莲、台东、屏东、南投等县、市的山区和浅山地带。生产方式以农业为主。台湾的原住民属于南语语系。在后来的大陆汉民陆续到达台湾以前，他们就在台湾生活。
