Wear
pajamas to the office? Do you think it is incredible an offensive
to your boss? Before today I would never have believed this could
happen and think it is out of imagination. But when I stepped into
Google's headquarters of China today many employees were
wearing pajamas and slippers. I was so astonished. At that
moment, I understood the Google's work culture and believed it is
true.
Google's
Beijing PR manager told me "Today is the pajama party in Google
global, so wherever you work, if you work for Google, you can wear
your pajamas to the office and enjoy your work. It's the just an
example of Google's informal culture. In some places you can take
your pet to the office."
I went
to Google's offices today, not for pajama party, but because
Google China organized their employees to choose their new chef.
The two chefs cooked western and Chinese food for their employees
who give them a score. The chef with the higher score will get the
job offer.Journalists were invited to taste the dishes. What
impressed me was not only the magnificent menu, but also the
decoration of the dinginroom. So colorful, so appealing, its more
like a kindergarten than dinging room. It's another example of
Google's culture - enjoy your work, and create a relaxed
environment at work.
Google's work
culture became legendary in Silicon Valley. Some people think
represented the most successful blend of culture and technology in
Silicon Valley. They felt that Google was successful because it has
removed unnecessary managerial hierarchies and gave its engineers a
free hand to work. But some felt that Google would not be able to
sustain its growth with its present culture. They felt that Google
outgrown its informal culture, and the informality would lead to
confusion among customers. For me, I think it's a dream to
work in google. I think it must let employees full of energy
to face challenges so they love this company so
deeply.
This morning my
colleague took so many photos of the employees wear pajamas and
slippers. One Google employee asked the photographer, "If you will
publish these photos, would you please blur my face. I will feel
shy to be dressed like this in newspaper." My colleague respond"No
problem, but usually we only do this if the person is accused of
committing a crime."
The boy was stymied!
