Five Children and It
Alvin
If you look at the story carefully you will realize that this isn’t your
typical bedtime fairy tale. It’s basically Aladdin and the Monkey’s
Paw put together.
The children were very lucky to find the Psammead, a little too
lucky in fact. However all the wishes went wrong. The wish of
becoming beautiful made them unrecognizable to Martha. Turns
out they are better off being themselves. Being inhumanly
beautiful is sometimes bad for your health. You need to be happy
with who you really are.
The wish for money isn’t good at all. The coins are simply too old.
So none of the shops sold them anything. And if the coins will
disappear at sundown, have they ever thought of the shopkeepers?
Selling things for money they can never own. That can be called
fraud or even theft. And it serves them right. The children are
simply too greedy to even concern about others.
Moreover it is not just. People have worked all their lives to get
2
half as much money, and they got it with a mere wish? Totally
unfair!
The wings are fine, but the theft of the plums is completely
unacceptable. Having wings doesn’t mean that you can nick
anybody’s stuff. Identifying themselves as birds is appropriate;
they are just like koel birds.
Bigger than the baker’s boy. Robert is just sick. Using the wish to
bully another boy. Being eleven feet tall doesn’t mean you can
pick on a normal kid. It is totally irresponsible. It’s a wonder that
children like that can find the Psammead.
The last wish knocked some sense into them. Being invincible
places a great responsibility on your shoulders. Perhaps you don’t
want it, but it is yours. If were to leave the world to suffer, nobody
can stop you, but there will always be people who fall to put an
end to the suffering. It might not be you, but you won’t be worthy
of your powers. Every single person in this the world would deny
it, because you’re not worth it.
The children behaved like real grownups in the end. Sacrificing
unlimited powers to make things right. They might not have super
3
powers anymore, but they are real heroes. They’ve grown.
Wishes never turn out good. If you believe in fairy tales, then God
will never allow such ungrateful children to handle this kind of
power. Imagine the chaos they will cause. There are more people
in need, thousands of orphans, millions of poor people and
countless workers who gave everything they’ve ever had: their
lives, their wealth, their everything to their family, their country,
their world. They’ve done nothing wrong, they need something,
anything to live on, food, clothes and hope. Is it too much to ask?
Is it just?
