享有中国古典小说“第一奇书”之誉的《金瓶梅》，刚一问世，便引起了当时文坛和社会的震动。虽历经四百多年，仍毁誉不一，称道者认为：《金瓶梅》是中国世情长篇小说的开山之作，是上承《水浒》与宋元平话，下启清初小说名作的一部伟作。古人也有《红楼梦》脱胎于《金瓶梅》之说，称其为我国小说史上的一部里程碑作品。而毁之者则视其为：古今第一淫书，坏人心术，决当焚之。 小说故事发生在清和县，西门庆看中潘金莲的美貌，为得逞淫欲，遂求王婆牵线，藏于王婆内房饮酒调情。武大郎捉奸不成反被打，重伤卧床又遭毒害。武松得知西门庆下毒害死武大郎，报仇心切误杀了他人，被发配到孟州牢城... 潘金莲这类堕落之女，当其人格尊严完全丧失至逐钱行乱时，已注定了生命的悲剧，潘金莲最终只有以自己最擅长的性与淫，要了西门庆的命。 西门庆出身土财主，其父开药铺。少年不好读书，缺乏教养。长大后，好结狐朋狗党，亦商亦官，独霸一方。他通官宦，搜民财，贪赃枉法，无恶不作,为霸占潘金莲，毒死武大；与李瓶儿通奸，将铁哥们花子虚活活气死；之后，又唆使无赖打死医生蒋竹山。恶棍西门庆以性事为乐，昼夜接交，终致脱阳而死。 官场中的“西门庆们”不妨以《金瓶梅》为戒。似西门庆这般“贪财、好色、玩权”的腐官，不仅大有人在，甚至于已有过之而无不极了！这些集权钱于一身的新权贵，横行官场、情场、商场，到处欺诈侵吞，哪里还管什么天理公道。鲁迅把《金瓶梅》称为“世情小说”，《金瓶梅》的作者无疑是在以“世情”警世。《金瓶梅》貌似游戏笔墨，实则蕴含着严肃的主题，既让人感到荒诞，又觉得颇有几分真实，是一部寓庄于谐的警世之作。 因此，对《金瓶梅》应作理性的解剖，以科学的、历史的眼光去认识作者的创作缘由。他为什么要这么写？提供给我们什么？告诉我们什么？警戒我们什么？这样的思考才是成熟和理性的读者。愿世人，男以西门为戒，女以金莲为戒，可乎？ 如此，或许现今社会将会多一点“和谐”的。
