Morgan Sze, the global head of Goldman Sachs’ biggest proprietary trading desk and one of the bank’s most highly paid employees, has begun raising money for what is expected to be the largest hedge fund launch since the financial crisis began.

Mr Sze’s new hedge fund – eagerly anticipated by many in the industry – is to be called Azentus Capital and will based in Hong Kong.

施家文新创的对冲基金将称作Azentus Capital，并将以香港为大本营，业内不少人士正对其翘首以待。

Marketers for the flagship fund expect it to start trading with between $1bn and $1.5bn, people familiar with the launch told the Financial Times.

Mr Sze has yet to leave his position at Goldman as global head of its GS Principal Strategies trading desk, which bets using the bank’s own money. The Azentus launch has tentatively been slated for the end of the first quarter of 2011.

At anything more than $1bn, Mr Sze’s new fund would comfortably exceed this year’s largest hedge fund launch – Edoma Capital – set up by Mr Sze’s erstwhile colleague at GSPS, Pierre-Henri Flamand.

It would also make Azentus one of the biggest hedge funds in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting the extent to which cities such as Hong Kong are catching up with the industry’s traditional centres in London and New York.

Azentus will trade a number of strategies, including equity long/short, risk arbitrage and more illiquid special situation investing.
