Topic 3 What should we do to fight SARS? Section C

I. Teaching Aims and Demands:

Language Goals:

1.     Review and grasp how to make telephone calls and write messages

2.     Learn the usage of Reflexive Pronouns.

3.     Learn and grasp some useful Reflexive Pronouns phrases.

Ability Goals:

1. Learn to observe, compare and make a summary.

2. Cultivate the ability of reading and try to get the information you need by some easy skills according to the purpose of reading.

Emotion Goals:

1. Learn to be helpful to others.

2. Learn to study in groups, communicate with others in English and cooperate in groups.

II. Teaching Important Points:

1.     Learn the usage of Reflexive Pronouns and the useful expressions of Reflexive Pronouns phrases.

2. Review and learn the following useful expressions:

enjoy oneself, hurt oneself, help oneself to… ,look after oneself, teach oneself, learn sth. by oneself , take an active part in, care for, It’s one’s duty to do sth.

III. Teaching Difficult Points:

1. Help the students make differences between the Reflexive Pronouns, learn to use them correctly and pay attention to the plural forms.

2.     Learn to get important information by reading with some skills.

IV. Teaching Methods:

1. Lead in with the help of pictures, slide shows, multimedia and so on.

2. Create an English-speaking environment-------Role play.

3. Project-based cooperative learning methods.

V. Teaching Aids:

Word cards, pictures, a tape recorder, a computer, screen, multimedia.

VI. Teaching procedure:

Step 1  Review

1. Review some new words with cards.

2.     Review how to make a telephone call and write the message. Show the Ss a picture of planting trees and the telephone message . Ask them to make a dialogue according to them.

 

TELEPHONE MESSAGE: Mary, Kate _______. Message:  Would you like to _______ _______at 8:00 this Saturday morning?  Please call her ______.

Or:

From: Kate      To: Mary TELEPHONE MESSAGE: Could you ________ ________with her at 8:00 this Saturday morning? ______her_______, please.

     

 

 

 

3.     Ask two pairs to act the dialogues out and the others finish the message.

Step2  Presentation

1. T: Today we’re going to learn Unit 2 Topic 3 Section C. At first, let’s      review and learn Reflexive Pronouns.

 (Show the students some slide shows and lead in the usage of Reflexive Pronouns)

T: Could she ride a bike when she was seven years old?

T: Yes, she could.

T: Who taught her? No one taught her. Can you guess?

T and Ss: She taught herself.

(教师板书she -------herself)

T: What’s he doing?

Ss: He’s swimming.

T: Is he enjoying himself?...

(教师板书he-------himself )

T: Look at this cat. Is it enjoying itself?

Ss: Yes, it is. It is enjoying itself.

(教师板书it — itself。)

T: Look, What did they do?

Ss: They had a birthday party.

T: Did they enjoy themselves?

(教师板书they--------themselves)

T: Excuse me, could you play computer games two years ago?

S2: Yes, I could.

T: Who taught you?

S2: I taught myself.

(教师板书I---------myself )

T: Did you watch TV during the summer holidays?

S3: Yes, I did.

T: Did you enjoy your self?...

(教师板书you -------yourself )

T: Can you brush your teeth?

S₄ and S₅: Yes, we can.

T: Who taught you?

S4and S₅: We taught ourselves.

T: Oh, you learned to brush teeth by yourselves, right?

(教师板书we -------ourselves,  you-------yourselves )

T: All these are Reflexive Pronouns, we can call them “oneself”.  Read together.

Reflexive Pronouns

Please look carefully and try to find out their regularity. Pay attention to their singular and plural forms. Who can talk about their regularity?  (Make a summary)

总结: 第一、二人称反身代词构造：形容词性物主代词+self/selves

      第三人称反身代词构造：宾格+self/selves

复数形式：self -----→ selves

2. T: Now, let’s learn some other phrases with Reflexive Pronouns.

(Show them some slide shows)

T: Look. What’s wrong with Kangkang?

Ss: He fell down.

T: Did he hurt himself? …

T: What’s she doing?... she is teaching herself. She is learning by herself.

T: His mother wasn’t at home. She left him at home by himself. He had to… look after himself. When you say goodbye to your friends, you can also say to him or her: Take care of yourself.

T: Look, so much food and drinks. Do they look delicious? Would you like to have some? Help yourselves to them. OK, we should learn how to use the Reflexive Pronouns. Let’s summarize the phrases. Together…Please don’t let me only say to myself.

(Show them on the screen)

teach oneself 自学,  learn…by oneself自学, by oneself 独自,亲自leave one by oneself  把某人单独留下enjoy oneself  玩得开心

hurt oneself伤了自己 help oneself(to…)请随便吃…, look after oneself照顾自己, take care of oneself照顾自己,保重…say to oneself自言自语

Step 3 Consolidation

2. Please look at the picture and complete the passage with Reflexive Pronouns phrases

Step4  Presentation

1. T: In this Unit we’ve learnt something about SARS. Please answer my             questions:

(1) What do you know about SARS?

 ( It’s a kind of terrible/serious disease.)

(2) What should we do to fight SARS?

(Show the Ss the pictures in Page 42 and Page 38. Lead the Ss to review and make a summery)

1.We must wash hands often and keep our fingernails clean and short.

2. We must eat healthy food.

3. We had better change our clothes often.

4. We had better keep our bodies clean.

5. We should open the windows and keep the air clean and fresh.

6. We must keep away from animals.

7. We shouldn’t throw litter about and we should keep our streets clean.

8. We should do morning exercises to build up our bodies.

9. We had better not go to crowded places.

  10. We could take some Chinese medicine.

(2). T: What do you know about Kangkang’s father?

 S₇:He is a doctor.

 S₈:He is in hospital now.

 S₉:He is examining the patients.

(Show two pictures on the screen)

T: Yes, Kangkang’s father is a brave and helpful doctor. When SARS spread in Beijing, he left his wife and his son to work. He was very busy. He couldn’t go home and he could only talk with his family on the phone. Now let’s listen to 1a and mark the following sentences True (T) or False (F).

(  ) 1. SARS is a kind of serious disease. (  ) 2. Kangkang’s father was a patient in Xiaotangshan Hospital. (  ) 3. Kangkang could only talk with his father on the phone (  ) 4. Kangkang’s father took good care of the patients.

 2. Open the books and read the passage alone carefully ,then finish 1b.

  He worked in the Xiaotangshan Hospital.

Step 5  Consolidation

1. Ask the Ss to find out the important language points.

We should take an active part in exercising.

   It’s our duty to study hard.

   It’s everyone’s duty to improve our environment.

2. Listen and imitate it. Let’s find the key words together.

Step 6  Practice

1. Ask the Ss to retell the passage according to the pictures and the key words together,

2. Retell the passage one by one. At last ask some Ss to retell it.

Step 7  Project

1. T: For example, I’m a famous reporter from CCTV. I’m going to interview some of you.

(1) What do you think of Kangkang’s father? Why?

(2) If you are a doctor, what should you do?

2. Ask the students to discuss “If you are a doctor, what should you do?”

 in groups of four.

3. Choose one to make a report in some groups.

4. Ask the students to write a composition about the topic, then choose four to show in class and check them.

5. Show a model.

Step 8  Homework

1. Review and make sentences with the Reflexive Pronouns and phrases.

2. Try to retell 1a.

3. Finish the written task.
