20世纪初的山水画家不再甘于临摹“四王”，往往由“四王”上溯明代、宋元乃至五代诸家，同时临习

“四僧”、“扬州画派”的风气盛行一时。陈半丁置身其中，山水画走的也是是同样的路子，由“四王”入手，

主要师法石涛，于石涛画风中加入宋元古意，形成个人苍润秀美，简约疏放的面貌。

     陈半丁是“运古派”的高手，他“一方面研究古法不遗余力，一方面发挥个性，表现自我，务以古人成法，运以自然丘壑，加以个人的理想化，造成一种与古不被被，却与古不同，不即不离的绘画”。
