II. Language Points
1.I was so nervous in his presence.(L6)
in sb.’s presence/in the presence of sb.: in the same place as someone else
I could think of little to say in the presence of so many people.
在这么多人面前,我几乎说不出话来。
我跟你说过别在我面前抽烟。
I have told you that don’t smoke in my presence
2. promising(L10): a. showing signs of being successful in the future
The boy is clever and hard-working; he must have a promising future.
这男孩既聪明又勤奋,他一定大有前途。
Intelligent and promising, students at this famous university are quite proud of themselves.
这所著名的大学里的学生聪明有为,很为自己感到骄傲。
3.by no means(L11): (used to emphasize a negative statement) not at all
We are by no means satisfied with their reply.
我们对他的答复一点也不满意。
这个故事一点儿也没意思。
The story is by no means interesting.
by no means 放句首要倒装
By no means will our friendship be affected
4. count on(L14):rely on; depend on
I had thought I could count on the support of my family; but I was wrong.
我原以为家人会支持我,可我想错了。
我不愉快时,总是靠父亲帮我鼓气。
I always count on my father to cheer me up whenever I feel unhappy.
5. Romantic and otherwise, Nikolai knew love.(L27)
Meaning: No matter Nikolai was romantic or not, he understood what love was.
6.fatigue(L31): vt. Make someone feel tired
My new job really fatigued me during the first two months.
我的新工作在最初的两个月真的使我感到非常疲劳。
He decided to quit his job because of fatigue.
他因为太累而决定辞掉工作。
7. come upon(L31): meet someone or find something by chance
He came upon an old friend on the street.
他在街上遇到一位老朋友。
他意外发现了一本梦寐以求的书。
He came upon a book he had always wanted to have.
8. indifferent(L34): a. (to)not interested in; not caring
He is a strong-minded adventurer, always indifferent to hardships and dangers.
他是个意志坚强的探险家,总是把困难和危险置之度外。
这个明星对公众的评价漠不关心。
The star is indifferent to public opinions.
9. pack into(L37): 挤入
Approximately 250students were packed into the classroom and I found it hard to breathe.
大约250名学生挤在教室里,我发觉连呼吸都很困难。
10. assert(L41): vt.
He asserted his ideas clearly at the board of directors.
1) state or declare forcefully
他在董事会上清楚地说出了他的想法。
他坚持说那个女孩偷了他的钱包。
He asserted that the girl had stolen his wallet.
2)make a claim to
那个国家的人民开始要求自治权。
He persistently asserted his right to a share in the heritage.
他始终声称他有分享那笔遗产的权利。
11. swear(L41): v.
1) (at)curse
The women swore at the waiter after he spilt coffee onto her skirt.
服务员把咖啡溅到了那个女人的裙子上,她狠狠地骂了他。
2) promise formally
I swear that I would never let the secret out.
我发誓我永远不会泄露这个秘密。
12. He saved his passion for skiing.(L44)
Meaning: He didn’t show strong feelings except in skiing.
13. sing out(L45): shout or sing some words clearly and loudly
期末考试结束了,学生们感觉很放松,大声谈论着假期计划。
14. persist(L52): v. (in, with) continue firmly(and perhaps unreasonably) in spite of opposition or warning
老师带病坚持工作。
vi. continue to exit
We hope the good weather will persist for at least one
week.
我们希望好天气能至少持续一周。
15. an I’ve-told-you-a-billion-times tone(L54)
一部永远不会忘记的电影
a never-to-be-forgotten film

16. feflect on: think deeply about; consider carefullyReflecting

17. in advance(L65): before a particular date or event
Thank you in advance.
预致谢意。
我预付了票款。
I paid for the ticket in advance.
