A confidant? A bosom friend? An intimate friend?

写这三个词，是因为想起了一个朋友——菲特。
菲特是悠悠的第一个英文老师，也是我最好的朋友。
英文中，可用“confidant”表示好朋友，源于动词“confide”。
“Confide”的主要意义有三，其一是“吐露（秘密、心声）”，confide TO sb sth. OR confide sth. to sb:
She confided all her secrets to her best friend. 她将自己所有的秘密都吐露（告诉）给了最好的朋友。
He confided to me that he had applied for another job. 他向我透露他曾经申请过另一工作。
He confided (to her) that his hair was not his own. 他告诉她他的头发是假的。
He confided to his friends that he didn't
have much hope for his marriage.
可以“吐露秘密”，当然也就可以“放心地托付”，confide sth to
sb:
She confied personal documents to her
lawyer.
可以“透露秘密”，可以“放心地托付”，这是什么呢？是“信任”。
It is important to have someone you can confide in. 有一些值得你信任的人是很重要的。
I hope you know that you can always confide
in
me.
I've never felt able to confide in my
sister.
好了，从“confide”的意义，我们很容易记住“confident”“confidence”和“confidant”的意义了。
一个“confidant”，就是那种用于值得信任，你可以像他吐露任何秘密的朋友。
我也一直记得我们中国人很喜欢用“bosom friends”和“intimate friends”表示“知心的朋友”，今天写此文的时候突然想起，“bosom friends”“intimate friends”和“confidant”有何异同呢？感觉上“confidant”强调此朋友可以信任，“bosom friends”强调“知心”， “intimate friends”强调情感的亲昵。不知我的感觉是否准确，因此做了一番调查。调查结果让我大跌眼镜。
先是在网上碰到了一个以前的学生，美国人，向他询问，他的回答是：
12:38:31 AM mitch.cook says: i've never in my lifetime heard intimate friend used。
大惊，立刻追问“bosom friend” 呢？回答是：不用。
感觉不可思议，立刻google，搜出无数条“bosom
friends”
心中疑惑，下课后找了五个学生，逐一询问，回答如下：
五个统一回答：你对三个词的感觉是对的，但是这两个词我们不用。其中一个笑着说：也许七十岁以上的人会用。另一人马上否定，不！“bosom
friends”应该是一个多两个世纪以前的用法！
两个回答，我们从来不用，但是听了听得懂。
一个回答，我从来不用，但是听了能猜得出来意思。
两个回答，我们从来不用，“bosom friend”猜得出来意思，“intimate friends”猜不出来。
再问：那“知心的朋友”怎么说？ 答：“close friends ”。
哎，因为想起菲特，写了这篇文章，没想到写作的过程再次无情的证明了菲特对我英文的评价：你喜欢用一些已经死了的英文！
也许这不仅仅是我的问题，也是很多学英文的中国人的问题，我们在学习的同时，忘了语言是发展的！
今天的一天可是够郁闷的，发现自己的英文可能真的有点“食古不化”了，不过反过来想想，一天的思考和调查，总算让我明白了这三个词的用法，也算聊有收获吧。
还好有一个词是对的：Cofidant.
