Hello everyone, good afternoon! First, I want to say many thanks to CANGO and China Civil Climate Action Network for giving me this opportunity. I’m Xin Hao, from Green Zhejiang, the largest environmental NGO in Zhejiang Province and a member of CCAN.

I assume you all know this famous magician Liu Qian. If it was 20 years ago, I would think all the issues in the world, including climate change, could be controlled by magicians. When I grew up, I realized politicians and business giants are much more powerful than magicians. But now, we hear more and more voices from the bottom, from the civil society, from grassroots NGOs. In fighting climate change, we have a new attitude – count me in!

My organization Green Zhejiang is based in the provincial capital city, Hangzhou. 700 years ago, Marco Polo visited Hangzhou and was amazed by its beauty. He described Hangzhou as “the City of Heaven.”  However, the beauty of my city is now under the threat of frequent climate disasters. Typhoon, droughts, floods… In summer the city is almost as hot as an erupting volcano. We are attacked by a-hundred-year returned typhoon every year! I just wanna ask: if even heaven is plagued by disasters, where should humans go? Fortunately, heaven’s people never stop dreaming and keep fighting for their dreams.  Here I’m telling seven dreams of seven Hangzhou people about their efforts to mitigate or adapt to climate change.

This painting shows a polar bear calling Chinese pandas. He is afraid of global warming, as there is only one tiny floating piece of ice left on the earth.  This is the work of a 13-year-old student Ma Xi from a primary school in rural area of Hangzhou.  Actually, it is just one part of world’s longest seawall painting about climate change, which was completed by 800 kids on this year’s World’s Earth Day.  The children dream that their painting would call people into action to fight climate change.  This painting along Qiantang River is 1.5 kilometers long currently and it will be extended on next year’s Earth Day.  Ma Xi loves drawing and dreams to be selected again as a volunteer for the seawall painting next year.  She also wishes that the length of the painting would break the Guinness World Record next year so as to raise more people’s awareness on climate change.

In Ma Xi’s hometown, there lives a deaf farmer named Chen Faqing. I first met him in his hometown 10 years ago when his life was seriously disturbed by environmental pollution.  In 10 years’ time, I have witnessed his growth from an environmental victim to a green soldier. Faqing gradually came to realize that climate change is a global issue and finally decided to donate his savings, previously set aside for renovating his house, to rescue the earth. He claimed to give out his money to the United Nations. Does the UN lack money? How could he get in touch with the UN? Why doesn’t he donate to the poor in China?  Most people found his dream naïve and absurd and were suspicious of his motivations—but not me. I respected him and I was wondering what a grassroots NGO could do to help him.  Luckily enough, I met IPCC Chairman Dr. Rajendra Pachauri during his visit to my university in September 2010. I told Dr. Pachauri Faqing’s story and his intention to make a donation to IPCC. Dr. Pachauri was so grateful and he suggested that the donation could be directed to IPCC Scholar Program to tackles the stability and human security problems caused by climate change in the most vulnerable regions.  After that, I spent almost a month coordinating the donation.  In that November, I arranged a direct phone call meeting for Dr. Pachauri and Faqing in my office. In the meeting, Dr. Pachauri was impressed by Faqing when he talked about his dream that one day all governments in the world would come together and sign an agreement on greenhouse gas reduction.  After that, I coordinated another donation of U.S. $40,000 from Faqing to the Mexican government for organizing COP 16. Last year, nominated by Dr. Pachauri, Faqing won the Green Global Foundation Award.  There, in New Delhi, the two had a 45-minute private face-to-face meeting. The next day, Faqing received the Green Hero Cup from John Prescott, the former Deputy Prime Minister and First Secretary of State of the United Kingdom.

In the same county, there is one of the world’s top low-carbon factories – Suncha. Zheng Chenglie, the founder and the chairman of the company, has deep affection for bamboo because he grew up in a village surrounded by bamboo.  Being inspired by the bamboo product fabricators in his hometown, he set out his own bamboo business in 1995.  His products have been greatly improved throughout the years, from chopsticks to all kinds of bamboo furniture.  Now Suncha is the world’s leading bamboo products producer. Look at these products from my home.  It could be made of bamboo, it could be made of bamboo, bamboo, bamboo… actually, all of these furnitures are made of bamboo.  Bamboo is a sustainable resource because it grows very fast.  Zheng Chenglie dreams that more manufacturers could replace wood and metals with bamboo.  The more bamboo products we use, the less trees we cut down and the less energy we consume. We could mitigate climate change simply by choosing low-carbon products for our own house.

Zheng is not the only one who runs an eco-friendly business in Hangzhou, there’s also Ye Jianfei.  This young man of 30s gave up his position as the chief director of Asian branch in a Fortune 500 corporation.  Why? Facing the roads jammed by automobiles, he dreamt that one day people could all travel in a low-carbon way.  With his experience of car-pooling during his study in the U.S., he developed a cell phone application called “PickRide” which enabled people to share ride with other application users daily or occasionally.  Upon its publication in the US 2 years ago, it attracted several hundred thousand of clients.  It was even reported to bring about a “world-wide transport revolution”.  Now “PickRide” has come to China.  My organization is in charge of its promotion in Zhejiang.  Ye Jianfei believes dreams more and more people could use the application to share their rides.

Another story is about Hangzhou low-carbon museum of China, which is the first low-carbon themed museum in the world. On one hand, low-carbon principle is held to throughout museum construction and decoration and exhibition material selection. Thematic exhibition rooms such as carbon-cycling room and global warming room was built so that the abstract idea of low-carbon is presented to visitors in a tangible and lively way. The curator Ji Jinghang is very proud of this green project which combines low-carbon and Hangzhou characteristics. He ambitiously dreams that major international conferences on climate change could be held in the museum. In this September, together with the museum, my organization initiated “Green Footprint Corporations Alliance” which aims at advocating low-carbon transformation in corporations.

Today, a board member of the Green Footprint Corporation Alliance who is also the chairman of Zhejiang Xunhua Technology Company Pan Nengbing is also here. His business is specialized in environmental engineering. The reason for him coming here is that he has strong interests in new technology of carbon capture and carbon dioxide purification, as he realized new technology could help us achieve the emission reduction goal at the same time bring new commercial benefits. Today, he represents Green Footprint Corporation Alliance and brings its dream also. Let me invite Mr. Pan.

(Pan: More green companies could join Green Footprint Corporation Alliance to provide solutions to emission reduction.)

I also have a climate related dream. This cloth is marked as made in Pakistan instead of China. These years we have noticed a trend that large international brands and retailers are moving business orders away from China. However, when we looked closely into this phenomenon we realized that the decrease in share of textile exports mainly takes place in the garment processing sector. In the stage of raw material processing like dyeing and finishing, China is still the world factory and the exports are still rising steadily. Do you know raw material processing consumes about 80% energy and resources and produces about 80% pollution in the entire cloth making process?  What’s worse, these big retailers and brands take little environmental responsibilities on their supply chains.  It is very unfair for a developing country like China. I dream that together with the international community we could actively respond to global climate change according to the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities”.

Above are seven climate dreams all related to, supported by or cooperated with my organization – a typical Chinese grassroots environmental NGO Green Zhejiang.  Today, what we are doing is still somewhat confusing for many Chinese people.  However, we believe in our dreams and won’t give up.  Among these seven Hangzhou people and many Chinese grassroots NGOs, there is something in common—the belief to change the world and the attitude Count Me In.

(注:Count me in!
