Passage14
(CCCAA)
Ever
since humans lived on the earth, they have made use of various
forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and
feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When it is difficult
to express with language , communication is accomplished() through
sign language in which body movements stand for letters, words, and
ideas. Tourist, the deaf, and the mute have had to turn to this
form of expression. Many of these movements are simple and exact
and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot.
Body language passes on ideas or thoughts by certain actions. A
nod means agreement, while shaking the head shows disagreement.
Other
forms of nonlinguistic()language can be found in Braille (a system
of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code,
and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn,
and instruct people.
While verbal form is the most common form of language, other

Passage15 (BACDB)
The early
1600s saw the beginning of a great tide of emigration()from Europe
to North America. Through more than three centuries, this movement
grew from a few hundred English colonists to a flood tide of
newcomers numbered in the millions. Powered by various motivations,
they built a new civilization on a once savage continent.
Though the new continent was rich in natural resources, trade
with Europe was important fro the import of articles the settlers
could not yet produce. The coastline served the immigrants well.
The whole length of shore provided many harbors for trading. Only
two areas --- North Carolina and Southern New Jersey --- lacked
harbors for ocean –going vessels.
Most European emigrant left their homelands for greater economic
opportunity --- an urge frequently stimulated by the longing for
religious freedom, or a determination to flee from political
oppression. Between 1620 and 1635 economic difficulties swept
England. Many people could not find work. Even skilled technicians
could earn little more than a bare living.
Political considerations also influenced many people to move to
America. In the 1630s, unsuccessful rule by England’s Charles I
also led to the migration to the New world. And the subsequent()

Passage 16
(AADDC)
Hi, My
name is Dina. I’m a black Canadian. When I was two-and a half years
old I was adopted by a white couple who already had two biological
sons. I am grateful for my parents and two brothers but growing up
was sometimes difficult.
Nearly
everyone living in our neighborhood was white. Children sometimes
teased()me and called me names because I was black…because I was
different… and because I didn’t know who my biological parents
are.
Adults could also be cruel.
Sometimes they would refuse to acknowledge my parents as my real
parents. It was difficult to understand such an attitude but as I
grew older I began to realize that they simple didn’t understand
that my parents had CHOSEN to raise me. I also realized that being
an adopted child didn’t make my own family less real or less
valuable.
Now that I am older , I can
see that I was lucky to be adopted. In North America, most couples
who adopt children want newborn babies. When a child is older than
two or three, it becomes more difficult for m=him or her to
adopted.
Children who cannot find
parents to adopt them are placed in foster ()homes. Foster children
do not become legal members of the family and many live with
several different families while they are growing up.
Fortunately this didn’t happen to me. As an adopted child, I
grew up as part of a family and with the same security as a child
born to the family. My parents are my parents and my brothers are
my brothers. I can’t imagine calling anyone else “mother” and
“father” or “brother”. “Adoption” is a word for outsiders.
