Young Goodman Brown
      Young Goodman Brown is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It concerns about a Christian Brown who believed in Humanity at first, while afterwards he lost all his faith in people around him. In the story, to begin with, he decided to attend the Witches’ Sabbath despite of the persuasion of her wife. In the forest, he saw many noble people’s bad behavior. To his surprise, he also found his wife Faith appear there. After going back home, he became despaired and did not believe in anything and anyone.
      The whole story is described from the analysis of Goodman Brown, the theme and style of the story, and my personal feelings.
      The whole story focused on the experience of Brown in the forest. Originally, Brown was a promising young Goodman. Because he had a strong belief in a Christian community. And he owned a pure, pretty wife. The life for him is so wonderful. However, all splendid things lost forever as soon as he was aware of the evil of the humanity. Actually, in psychological part, Brown was a contradictory person. In one side, he believed in God and Christian, however, he also was easily seduced by the evil. In the end, he was suspicious of others just because of his faith collapsing. It is a bit of satirical. 
      Meanwhile, this story reveals the ugliest side of human nature, that is, “original sin”. Some noble and honest people are not always the same as what we see. So we should learn to tell the good man and bad man when making friends.
Symbolism is fully represented in the story. For instance, the old man Brown met in the forest who held a serpent walking stick. It was his staff which implied evil. It can easily make us think of the wicked serpent in the Bible. Another example is the pink ribbon. It was referred three times in the story. The first time, it was happened when saying goodbye to Faith, it is represented as a pure angel. The second time Brown saw it in the witch meeting. It has lost it purity. The last time, he waked up at home the next morning. The pink ribbon was still tied on the neck of his wife. However, it is not a symbol of purity, but always makes him remind of what happened in the forest.
       What impressed most is the process of faith collapsing. In our daily life, faith plays an important role on our life. Lacking of faith, no matter what you want to do, success is of less possibility. Faith, to some extent, is equal to one’s goal. One who’d like to succeed needs to set a right goal at first. According to the goal, then making a detailed plan, we can get a satisfying result. Faith also can rescue people’s life. In 2008, a catastrophic Wenchuan earthquake claimed many people’s life. Still, there were plenty of people survived at that time owing to their iron will. All these examples can prove the significance of Faith.
