Research Interests: Industrial organization

John Panzar's research has focused on the theoretical and policy problems posed by multiproduct natural monopolies, with particular reference to network industries such as telecommunications, electric power, air transport and postal services. The primary policy issue in such industries is the trade-off between economies of scale and scope and the efficiencies promised by increased competition.

Research Interests: Applied microeconomics - Transportation economics - Urban and regional economics

Leon Moses' work is primarily concerned with the economics of firm location, and the critical role played by transportation networks and transportation costs. He also applied his models of firm location to examine the evolution of the structure of urban areas. He has contributed to the understanding of transportation costs by examining how commuters value their time spent in traveling, and how firms choose between consigning their goods with different forms of transportation. Finally, he analyzed the safety of transportation as it transitioned into an economically deregulated era, and how society can limit the risks from transporting hazardous materials.
