When I was a kid, everything in my bedroom was pink. I have two sisters and we had a complete miniature kitchen, a herd of My Little Ponies and several Barbie and Ken dolls.

So some people may find it ironic that I grew up to be a mechanical engineer.

正因为如此，有些人对我长大后成了一名机械工程师也许感到出乎意外。

 

5.         convert v. change (from one form, use, etc. to another) （使）转变，(使)转化

e.g.他们上周把那间闲置的卧室变成了办公室。

They converted the spare bedroom into an office last week.

[word-formation]词根-vert, -vers= to turn (转向)

convert=con(together)+vert(turn) v. 转变,转化

Note:汽车的倒车档是 “R”(reverse)。

6.         hybrid adj. 混合的；杂种的 n.混合型机器；杂交动植物

SUV: Sports Utility Vehicle运动多用途汽车

HEV: Hybrid Electric Vehicle油电混合动力车

Note: 通常所说的混合动力一般是指油电混合动力，即燃料（汽油，柴油等）和电能的混合。混合动力汽车是由电动马达作为发动机的辅助动力驱动汽车，更环保，更节能。

I also had to work with a team of students as part of a national competition to convert a gas-guzzling SUV into a hybrid electric vehicle -- that's where I learned how to fix cars.

注：trans- = across 到另一方；lat = to carry 带；-e ⇒to carry an idea another language 将某种意思带到另一种语方去

transplant=trans(over)+plant(to plant) 移植

 

When I was in high school, I didn't know the first thing about engineering. I couldn't have distinguished a transmission from an alternator.

我上高中时对工程一无所知。我那时不能辨别变速器和交流发电机。

 

10.     not know any better: used to say that someone does sth. bad or stupid because they have not been told that it is wrong因无知而做错事或干傻事

e.g. Don't blame the children for their bad manners they don't know any better.

The car I drove needed some work but I was afraid to take it to the mechanic. Because honestly, the mechanic could have shown me an electric can opener and said, "This is part of your car and it's broken -- pay me to fix it," and I wouldn't have known any better.

我开的车需要修理，但是我不敢把车开到修理工那里，因为说实话，如果修理工给我看一把电动开罐器并对我说：“这是你的汽车部件，坏了——你付钱我给你修，”我也不会知道他在敲诈(还是把车交给他修)。

I applied to the program, not because I wanted to be an engineer, but because I was craving independence and wanted to get out of my parents' house for six weeks.

12.     decent adj. good enough; socially acceptable像样的，相当好的；得体的

e.g. I’ll buy whichever decent car model that comes first for a good price.

Five years later I had a degree and three decent job offers.

13.     can’t help doing: be unable to prevent oneself from doing 忍不住要做（某事）

14.     shudder v. shake uncontrollably; tremble with fear or disgust 战栗；（因恐惧或厌恶而）发抖

The earth under my feet shuddered. Was it an earthquake?

15.     at a disadvantage: in a situation where one is less likely to succeed because of a problem处于不利地位

e.g. I'm as good a cook as she is, except when it comes to making bread.

I can't help shuddering when I hear about studies that show that women are at a disadvantage when it comes to math.

17.     imply v. express indirectly, suggest 暗示；含有……的意思

e.g. 玛丽虽然没确切地说她打算出国，但言下之意确实是这样。

Mary did not actually say that she was going abroad, but she certainly implied that she was.

18.     abnormal adj. different, often in an undesirable way, from what is normal, or expected不正常的；变态的

[反义词] normal

19.     stumble v. hit your foot against sth. when walking; walk unsteadily 绊了一下；跌跌撞撞而行

20.     stumble into: enter by accident偶尔步入

They imply that I am somehow abnormal. I'm not, but I do know that if I hadn't stumbled into that summer program, I wouldn't be an engineer.

他们的言下之意是我有点反常。我一点也不反常，但是我知道，要不是我偶然闯进了那个暑期班，我是成不了工程师的。

 

21.     grit one’s teeth: press one’s teeth together tightly in anger or determination 咬紧牙关，下定决心

e.g. When things get difficult in learning a new language, you need to grit your teeth and persevere. 在学一门新语言时遇到困难，你需要咬紧牙关坚持下去。

Just because a subject is difficult to learn, it does not mean you are not good at it. You just have to grit your teeth and work harder to get good at it.

某一门课程难学，并不意味着你不擅长它。你得咬紧牙加倍努力干，才能学好它。

 

22.     indication n. a sign that shows sth. exists, is true , or will happen 迹象；表示

I was lucky enough to have a teacher who didn't take my bad grades as a judgment of my abilities, but simply as an indication that I should study more.

值得庆幸的是我有一位老师，他没有根据我的低分来衡量我的能力，而认为低分只表示我应该下更大的功夫。

 

23.     panic n. sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety惊慌，恐慌

v. 惊慌失措 (Note:动词形式变化panicked, panicking)

24.     buzz n./v.(make) a continuous sound like bees（作）嗡嗡声

e.g. 我醒来的时候发现一只蜜蜂在我的头上嗡嗡飞。

When I woke up, I found a bee flying and buzzing over my head.

I had moments of panic while sitting underneath the buzzing fluorescent lights in the engineering library on Saturday afternoons, when I worried that the estrogen in my body was preventing me from understanding thermodynamics.

我在大学也很努力。星期六下午坐在工程图书馆吱吱作响的荧光灯下学习时，我也有过恐惧的时候，担心我体内的雌激素妨碍我理解热动力学。

 

25.     faulty adj. mistaken or misleading because of flaws; defective 有错误的；有缺陷的

27.     cultural adj. relating to the culture of a particular society, group or country 文化（上）的 [word family] culture n. 

Those studies that say that math comes more naturally to men, are based on a faulty premise: that you can judge a person's abilities separate from the cultural cues that she has received since she was an infant.

宣称男性天生更能学好数学的研究是基于一个错误的前提，那就是认为人们可以脱离一个人从孩提时代就受到社会的文化熏陶而径直判断她的能力。

Instead of translating our differences into hard and fast conclusions about the human brain, why can't we focus instead on how incredibly flexible we are?

29.     leap n./v. (a sudden) jump 跳；跃

[Collocation搭配] a leap in the dark: an action or a risk that you take without knowing anything about the activity or what the result will be冒险的行动；轻举妄动

e.g. 我不知道新的工作会是如何，我只是冒险为之。

I didn't know what the new job would be like -- I just took a leap in the dark.

30.     selective adj. tending to choose carefully 仔细挑选的；有选择的

A woman can learn anything a man can, but first she needs to know that she can do it, and that takes a leap of faith. It also helps to have selective hearing.

男人学得会的女人也学得会。但是女人首先需要知道她能学会，而这需要有敢冒风险而为的精神。同时听别人的话也得有所选择才行。
