1.         turn away: refuse to help (sb.) or allow (sb.) to enter a place 拒绝帮助；不让……进入

e.g.他毕竟是我儿子，我不能在他有麻烦的时候拒绝帮助他。
He’s my son after all, I can’t just turned him away when he is in trouble.

 

Yes, these Depression days were difficult, but how could I turn away a person who had come to me for help?

 

2.         assume vt. suppose 假设；以为

e.g.我以为你们相互认识，因为你们在同一个学校上过学。
I assumed that you knew each other because you went to the same school.

 

I assumed you had hired him.

 

3.         work out: plan; solve; calculate 制定出；解决；算出

4.         weekly adj. happening once a week or every week

5.         clean up: make clean and tidy 打扫，清除

e.g. 我一打扫完厨房就和你去购物。

I’ll go shopping with you as soon as I’ve cleaned up the kitchen.

 

I managed to work out some kind of small weekly pay, and each day Tony cleaned up the yard and took care of any little tasks.

7.         determination: n. the ability to continue trying to achieve what you have decided to do even when this is difficult 决心；决定

Well, what do you do with such determination and hope?

 

8.         personnel: n.the department in a large organization that deals with employees 人事部门

       [Collocation: personnel department人事部门]

The months passed. I asked the personnel department for a report. They said Tony was a very good worker.

9.         capacity: n. the ability to understand or do sth. 能力，才能，资质

[Collocation:搭配~for/to]

e.g.她学语言的能力让我吃惊。

Her capacity for learning languages astonished me.

He has the capacity to organize a club.

10.     precision n.the quality of being exact 精密；精确（性）

But I doubted whether Tony had the capacity to read blueprints and micrometers or do precision work.

可我怀疑托尼是否有能力学会看图纸，用千分尺，是否胜任做精密的工作。

 

11.     turn down: reject or refuse to consider (an offer, a proposal, etc or the person who makes it) 顶回或拒不理会（好意﹑ 建议等或提议的人）

e.g. 他请求简嫁给他, 但她拒绝了.

He asked Jane to marry him but she turned him down/turned down his proposal.

 

How could I turned him down?

 

12.     skilled: adj. having skill, experienced；needing skill 熟练的，有技巧的；技术性的

Months later, I got a report that he had graduated as a skilled grinder.

 

13.     for sale: intended to be sold, available to be bought待售，供出售

e.g. 这套公寓以四十万美元出售。

The apartment is for sale at＄400,000.

14.     wreck n. 残破物；（尤指失事船只、飞机等的）残骸

 

On the edge of town, he had found a house for sale, a complete wreck.

 

15.     call on: visit sb. for a short time 拜访

e.g. 他想下班后去看看他的女朋友，然后和她去看个电影。

He wanted to call on his girlfriend after work, and then go to see a movie with her.

 

I called on a banker friend.

 

16.     loan: vt. lend 借，贷 n. 贷款

17.     character: n. （人的）品德；品质；性格

 

Do you loan money on character?

18.     discard vt. (fml) throw away抛弃

From then on, Tony started to gather discarded odds and ends around our place.

 

19.     confidence: n. the quality of being certain of one’s abilities or of trusting other people 信心

He had a look of confidence.

He had hunted around the edge of town until he found a small, abandoned piece of property with a house and a shed.

24.     sometime: adv. at a purticular time but unspecified time某个时候

He saw her at the airport sometime last week.

Sometime later, Tony arrived on a Saturday afternoon, neatly dressed.

 

25.     sponsor n.担保人, 保人; 赞助人, 赞助公司. v. 担保或赞助（某人[某事物]）

He told me that he had persuaded his childhood friend t move to America. Tony was sponsoring him.

他告诉我，他说服了儿时的伙伴前来美国，托尼为他作经济担保。

26.     pass away: die 去世

Tony had passed away.

 

27.     check on examine sth. to discover if it is true, safe, correct, etc. 检查，调查，察看

e.g. 亲爱的，你可以去楼上看看孩子们(还好)吗？

Honey, can you go upstairs and check on the kids?

 

28.     handle: v. manage; control 管理，处理；操纵

e.g.肯定会有一些问题，但是没有一样是你不能搞定的。

There’ll certainly be some problems, but nothing that you can’t handle.

 

I asked our people to check on his family and see that everything was properly handled.

我让公司的人去他家看看，确保各项事宜都得到妥善安置。
