Writing for Myself

1.       off and on (or on and off): from time to time; sometimes断断续续;有时

e.g.这一周时不时就下雨,这就是为什么衣服潮潮的。
It has been raining on and off for a week. That’s why the clothes feel damp.

2.       take hold: become established 生根,确立

e.g. 你得一周里每天都早起直到养成这个习惯。

You’ll have to force yourself to get up early every day for a week until the habit takes hold.

[Tips: take hold主语通常是物而非人]

The idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood in Belleville, but it wasn’t until my third year in high school that the possibility took hold.

从孩提时代,我还住在贝尔维尔时,我的脑子里就断断续续地转着当作家的念头,但直等到我高中三年级,这—想法才有了实现的可能。

3.       associate v. join (people or things) together; connect (ideas, etc) in one's mind 使联系起来;使联想

[Collocation: ~sb/sth (with sb/sth)]

e.g. 以前人们把苹果和亚当夏娃或者牛顿联系起来,但现在人们却常把苹果和iphone联系起来。

People used to associate “apple” with Eve and Adam, or Newton, but now they often associate it with iphone.

Until then I’d been bored by everything associated with English courses.

这之前,我对所有英文课沾边的事感到腻味。

4.       turn out : produce sb/sth 编写;制造;培养

e.g. The college has turned out some outstanding graduates.

这个学院培养出了一些杰出的毕业生。

5.       agony n. very great pain or suffering(身心的)极度痛苦

[Collocation: in agony, agony of]

e.g. He was in agony after breaking up with his girlfriend.

e.g. She was in an agony of indecision. 她陷於犹豫不决的痛苦之中.

I hated the assignments to turn out long, lifeless paragraphs that were agony for teachers to read and for me to write.

我痛恨那些长而乏味的段落写作,老师读着受累,我写着痛苦

6.       assign v. give as a share or duty分配,分派  

+ assignment n. 任务,作业

7.       anticipate vt. epect 预期

[Usage:: + noun, v-ing动名词 or that-从句]

[Notes: 该动词所接的宾语可以是动名词,不可用不定式代替。] 

(+noun) e.g. I anticipated another cheerless year in that most tedious of subjects.

(+v-ing) e.g. They anticipate moving to a bigger house by the end of the year.

他们预计年终会搬到一座更大的房子。
(+that -clause)
 e.g. We anticipate that demand is likely to increase. 我们预料需求可能增加. 

8.       tedious adj. boring and lasting for a long time乏味冗长的

When our class was assigned to Mr. Fleagle for third-year English, I anticipated another cheerless year in that most tedious of subjects.

弗利格尔先生接我们的高三英文课时,我就准备着在这门最最单调乏味的课上再熬上沉闷的—年。 

9.       reputation n. what is generally said or believed about the abilities, qualities名声;名誉

[Collocation: ~ for sth/ ~ as sth]

~ for sth:  Mr. Fleagle had a reputation among students for dullness and inability to inspire.

Fleagle先生以上课乏味激励学生无术而出名。

~ as sth: e.g. He a good reputation as a doctor 他医疗信誉好。 

10.   inspire vt. fill (sb.) with confidence, eagerness, etc 激励,鼓舞

[Usage: ~ sb to do sth]

e.g. Martin Luther King’s speeches inspired people to fight for equal treatment of African Americans. 

Mr. Fleagle had a reputation among students for dullness and inability to inspire.

Fleagle先生以上课乏味激励学生无术而出名

11.   formal adj.刻板的,拘谨的;正式的

12.   rigid adj. fixed in behavior, views or methods 一成不变的

13.   out of date  adj. old-fashioned 过时的

He was said to be very formalrigid and hopelessly out of date.

据说他拘谨刻板完全落后于时代 

14.   severe adj. completely plain; causing very great pain, difficulty, etc朴素的;严重的

He wore severe eyeglasses. 他戴着毫无装饰的眼镜。

15.   tackle v. deal with or overcome 处理,应付

e.g.  It's time to tackle my homework. 现在该对付我的家庭作业了. 

Late in the year we tackled the informal essay.

后半学期我们学写随笔小品文。 

16.   distribute vt. divide and give out among people分发

Mr. Fleagle distributed a homework sheet offering us a choice of topics.

弗利格尔先生发下—张家庭作业纸,出了不少题目供我们选择。

18.   face up to: be brave enough to accept or deal with勇改地接受或对付

24.   recall vt. bring (sth/sb) back into the mind; recollect 回忆(某事物[某人]记起

[Usage:+ noun, v-ing动名词 or that-从句]

(+ Noun/Gerund) e.g.  I can't recall his name. 我想不起他的名字了.

e.g. I recall seeing him. 我记得见过他.

(+ that-clause) e.g. She recalled that he had left early. 她回忆起他走得很早. 

All the good humor of Uncle Allen’s house reawoke in my mind as I recalled the laughing arguments…

艾伦舅舅家诙谐有趣的场景全都重现在我的脑海中,我回想起来,当晚我们笑作—团,争论…… 

25.   put down: write down写下

我把它写下来仅仅是想自娱自乐。I want to put it down simply for my own joy. 

26.   violate vt. break or be contrary to (a rule, principle, treaty, etc) 违反违背(规则﹑ 原则﹑ 条约等)

[Collocation:违反规定violate rules ]

e.g. If you skip a class without asking for a leave, you violate the school’s ground rules.

如果你没请假逃课的话,你违反了学校的基本规定。 

To write it as I wanted, however, would violate all the rules of formal composition I’d learned in school, and Mr. Fleagle would surely give it a failing grade.

然而,照我希望的那样去写,就会违反我在学校里学的正式作文的种种法则,弗利格尔先生也肯定会打它一个不及格。

27.   compose vt. write or create (music, poetry, etc.) 创作

[Collocation: 写一篇文章compose an essay]

When I finished it the night was half gone and there was no time left to compose a proper, respectable essay for Mr. Fleagle. 等我写完时已是半夜时分,再没时间为弗利格尔先生一篇循规蹈矩、像模像样的文章了。 

28.   turn in: hand in (work that one has done) 交(作业)

e.g.我们什么时候交作业呢?When shall we turn in our assignments? 

There was no choice next morning but to turn in my tale of the Belleville supper.

第二天上午,我别无选择,只好把我为自己而写的贝尔维尔晚餐的故事交了上去

31.   hold back: prevent the epression of (feelings, tears, etc.) 控制(感情,眼泪等)

e.g. He bravely held back his tears. 他强忍着不让眼泪流出来. 

Even Mr. Fleagle stopped two or three times to hold back a small prim smile.

就连弗利格尔先生也停顿了两三次,好抑制他那一丝拘谨的微笑。 

32.   avoid vt. keep or get away from 避免

I did my best to avoid showing pleasure.

我尽力不流露出得意的心情。 

33.   career n. 生涯(即progress through life生命的历程);职业,事业

[Collocation: 求学生涯school career]

e.g. 学习是一生的事业。Learning is a life-long career 

It was the happiest moment of my entire school career.

34.   respectable  adj. (of behavior, etc.)socially acceptable体面的,合乎礼仪的;可敬的

a socially respectable method for eating spaghetti

吃意大利面的合乎礼仪的方法 

e.g. Alan was always in trouble with the police when he was young, but he's now a respectable married man.艾伦年轻时常常落入警方手中,但现在他是个受人尊敬已婚男士。
