昨天@时代の句变 16021暮 发布了路透社的一则新闻，我发现两名译者对原文中的倍数翻译欠妥。因此，特意把王大伟和魏清光老师书中介绍关于倍数和百分比译法的内容复习了一下。

原文：New evidence points to the 9th planet in the scholar system, which is 5,000 times bigger than the outcast Pluto.

译文1：新证据表明，太阳系存在第九大行星，其体积超过被逐出行星之列的冥王星5000倍。

译文2：新迹象揭露太阳系第九颗行星，比降级”弃儿“冥王星大5000倍。

问题：如果译文处理成超过5000倍或大5000倍，那么读者可能会认为这第九大行星的体积是冥王星体积的5001倍。但原文似乎不是这个意思。

1. 倍数的译法

“A比B高8倍以上”不可译成A is 8 times higher than B，应译成A is 9 times as high as B/A is 9 times higher than B。

在英语中如用times，就不存在“比......大几倍”的语义。即使添加by，说成A has increased by three times，其语义与A has increased three times相同，都是指A增加了两倍。因为我们听到过、读到过increase two/three/four times，但从来没见过increase one time或increase 1.5 times。可见increase two times已经是最小值了，也即增加一倍。

-fold所表达的概念与times相同。例如，a seven-fold increase等于increase seven times或increase 600%。

注：从理解的角度应把A is 8 times as high as B与A is 8 times higher than视为意义相同的表达法。但从写、说的角度来看，最好使用以上第一种句型，不要使用第二种句型，因为在全世界，除了英美等英语国家，还有许多国家都在使用英语。各国人对第二种句型的理解可能有所不同，如使用第一种句型便可避免麻烦。

2. 百分比的译法

increase two times不是相当于increase 200%，而是相当于increase 100%。因为如果increase 200%仅指increase two times，那么increase 100%似乎应指未增加，increase 50%则应是减少，这明显是荒唐的。总之，如使用百分比，便表达了汉语的“增加了百分之几”的概念。

如：“增长了123%”可译成increase 123%，也可以译成increase by 123%。increase 123%相当于increase 2.23 times。

补充：“同比增长”的译法：

如：“比前五年增长67%”。

译文1：..., 67% over the figure for the previous five years.

译文2：..., an increase of 67% compared with the previous five years.（比较啰嗦）

译文3：..., 67% over the figure for the previous five years.（较简单）

译文4：..., up 67% from/over the previous five years.（更简单）
