盐田千春Chiharu Shiota1972年出生于大阪，现在工作生活在柏林。1996年从油画系毕业以后，她搬到德国，师从Marina Abramovic。作品包括装置、行为、录像。

在2001年横滨双年展上，作品《皮肤的记忆Memory of Skin》让她开始在日本和国际上受到广泛的关注。

艺术家的创作通常与童年受到的创伤、记忆有关，Shiota对记忆的使用甚至到了有点偏执的地步。她小的时候，曾经目睹了邻居家的一场火灾，她至今仍清晰的记得钢琴在大火里垮掉的声音。后来，她开始尝试把这种对她来说刻骨铭心的记忆转换成相对安全的可见的形式。她在房间里拉满无数密密麻麻的棉线，从地板到天花板到墙，为所有东西作茧，包括烧过的钢琴。
这是她对记忆和遗忘的迷恋。她的作品，也是对亚洲、欧洲文化转换的一种尝试。

Shiota纽约第一个个展《At Goff + Rosenthal》上，她烧掉几十把椅子，然后也给它们缠上无数的线。足足用掉14公里的棉线。从四面八方织起来的线网构成一个封闭的空间。还冒着糊味的椅子，消失在观众的视线中。这只是Shiota所构建的场景的一个例子。它们给观众留下深刻的印象：死亡、压抑、灾难的综合震撼。

Shiota经常被拿来与Eva Hesse比较，但她与Gertrude Goldschmidt更有相似之处——都把“线”作为主要材料。而线之于Shiota，更象是画布，是二维的空间，用线作画笔构成的几何刺绣。

“在这个虚伪、无止尽的世界，我用“泥土”作为创作材料。我试图一次次把泥倒在自己的脸上，以重获意识，找寻自己真正的使命。对我来说，这是一个仪式。我小时候的玩具娃娃已经变得破烂肮脏，逃脱了与我的关系。她有了自由，但不能呼吸。
恐惧，面对生活无法相信任何事物，死亡和现在。在浴室里我把泥浆浇到头上，听身体呼吸的声音。我想要接触泥土。”
