In the past, buildings often reflected the culture of a society but today all modern buildings look alike and cities throughout the world are becoming more and more similar. What do you think is the reason for this and is it a good thing or a bad thing?

Every city has its architectural character, but nowadays, similarities between cities are more obvious than in the past. From European cities, such as Paris and London, to Asian cities, such as Tokyo and Beijing, similar sky scratchers, stadiums, theatres and many other buildings can be seen everywhere. From my perspective, one reason for this is that the local cultures, which only belong to their cities, are disappearing.

As we know, buildings of a city are reflection of a culture. In many countries, especially Asian countries, those buildings of traditional design are becoming less and lessrare. This phenomenon may lead to a problem that if a man leaves his homeland for several decades, even a couple of years, he may fail to recognizebe shocked by the change taken place in the amenity and appearance of buildings in his homeland. It can be imagined that how lonely and sorrowful he may feel. This may be due to the disappearance fading away of the traditional culture.

However, through hiswith tears, this a man may find that all these changes are not soas bad as he thoughtthinks, though these cold sky scratchers have been replace replacing the former familiar buildings, for example, wooden houses which he was familiar with. This is because changes, which are happening all over the world, are overwhelming and inspiring. That is to say, both the disappearance of conventional culture and the advections of new culture cannot be avoided and human beings may benefit from these changes.

From the caves and wooden houses to the buildings made of iron and concrete, people are seeking for architectures which can provide them with a safer and more comfortable place for working and living. People around the world are sharing this idea, which makes them gradually abandon the conventional but more characteristic designs of buildings. For example, in my country, people tended to build buildings like those in the Forbidden City in the ancient times, but now, they use concrete and iron to replace the wood nowen architectures, designing buildings in the same way as western people do.

Thus, I would like to come to a conclusion that  comparing both hands of this issue, it is our best choice to enhance the similarities among cities. However, we should also try to preserve some of those well-designed traditional buildings as cultural heritage while accepting these changes.
