八士原名“八字桥”，因镇中的市河交叉处有座桥呈“八”字形而得名，简称“八士”。1949年为八士镇，1956年改八士乡，后改公社，1983年复设八士乡，1993年更置八士镇。2004年八士、张泾2镇合并设立锡北镇。
