美国疾病控制与预防中心（the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention）认为病毒性肝炎（Viral hepatitis）不仅是诱发肝癌的最重要病因，亦是需要肝移植（liver
transplantation）的最常见原因。
据估计，全世界约有3亿5千万乙肝病毒感染者，每年引起肝癌约34万例，其中约有50～120万例乙肝病毒感染者辞世（An estimated 350 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis B virus, which causes 340,000 cases of liver cancer a year and kills between 500,000 and 1.2 million people a year.）。
