人类免疫缺陷病毒可以破坏人体防御细胞，即一种被称之为CD4 的辅助淋巴细胞（CD4 helper lymphocyte）。CD4 辅助淋巴细胞相当于邮差，它可以指挥其它免疫系统的细胞抗击入侵的微生物。当人类免疫缺陷病毒感染CD4 辅助淋巴细胞后，它们可寄居在CD4 辅助淋巴细胞内繁殖，病毒繁殖的过程可以让CD4 辅助淋巴细胞失去抗感染能力。因此，艾滋病患者不仅不能抗击多种感染，且易患某些肿瘤，如Karposi肉瘤和淋巴瘤。

How does HIV affect the body?

 

    HIV destroys a defense cell in the body called a CD4 helper lymphocyte. The CD4 lymphocyte acts as a messenger to other types of immune system cells, telling them to fight against an invading organism.The HIV attaches to these CD4 cells, it infects them and uses them as a place for multiplying. In this process, the infected cells lose their ability to fight infection. People with AIDS are unable to fight off many infections and can also develop certain types of cancer e.g. Karposi sarcoma and lymphoma.
