Navigating and surviving in this vast, remote wilderness, had proved almost impossible for these experienced sailors. And at times, even the ultimate ocean travelers need help. Natural harbours may be safe heavens for sailors, but for the migratory whales they can be death traps. One whale is still alive. Left like this, he will die within days. But he’s held fast. The only option left is to use nets. At last he’s free. But he’s not out of trouble yet. First, he must negotiate the rocky heads of the bay. His sensitive skin, never designed to touch rock, is badly lacerated.  He is through and back into the safety of the endless blue.

W: Doctor Brown, is it true that English people prefer old things to new ones? 

M: I suppose so, the English are very fond of traditions.

W: I was thinking more about houses and other things.

M: It depends on what kind of old things you are talking about. I would always prefer to live in an old house with a garden than some new one. I used to live in a house that is over one hundred years old. It was really some thing I am proud of, so yes, on the whole, I think the English do prefer old things.

W: Why do you think that is the case?

M: Well, a lot of people feel not all things were much better made. It also goes better with old style houses. We think lots of modern furniture is poorly made.

 “This is not Jacky”

Mrs. and Mr. Brown were going abroad for their holiday. They had a dog called Jacky. They loved the dog very much but they could not take him abroad with them. So they looked for a suitable place to leave him while they were not at home. Finally, they found a very good pet shop. The pet shop looked after dogs and other pets very well while the owners were away. They took Jacky there just before they left for their holiday and sadly said goodbye to the dog. About one month later, they came back from holiday. Mr. Brown drove his car to get Jacky. When he reached home with the dog, he said to his wife, “Do you know, dear, I don’t think Jacky has enjoyed his stay at that place very much. He barked all the way home in the car as if he wanted to tell me something.” Mr. Brown looked at the dog carefully and answered, “You are quite right, dear, he was certainly trying to tell you something. But he was not trying to tell you that he had not enjoyed his stay at that place. He was only trying to tell you that you were bringing the wrong dog home. This is not Jacky.”

An Invited Cat

When she was in England last year, Mary was invited to a party held by Mr. and Mrs.Brown. When Mr. and Mrs. Brown opened the door for her, a white back ran into the house ahead of Mary. Mary liked the cat very much. She bent down and asked the cat to come to her. Immediately, the lovely cat ran down towards her. Mrs. Brown looked at the cat with a smile. And then she asked Mary to sit down and have a cup of tea. Mary took her seat and the cat followed her, sitting beside her feet quietly. The cat looked at them while they were talking. But soon she started to go around the house and climb over chairs and tables. Mr. and Mrs. Brown watched the cat and became very upset. They could not concentrate on their conversation. Looking at the cat, Mary said to them, “Your cat is very clever and is very friendly with visitors”. Hearing this, Mr. and Mrs. Brown was very surprised, “Our cat? We thought it was yours. ” They thought that Mary brought the cat with her and it was very impolite to let it climb over everything.
