Fringe一词在英语中的原意是“边缘”

英语中说“每一道乌云都有金边”(every cloud has a silver lining)

所谓“fringe benefit”，“边缘的好处”，就是乌云的金边

就是指一件坏事所带来的、些微的好处

bound ,原型bind，意思是捆绑。

be bound by ...，被……捆在一起，用日本动漫里的话来说，大概就是“羁绊”“牵绊”吧

compromise v&n.折衷，妥协的意思；

romantic大家都知道是浪漫的意思，这里的动词romanticise就是把…浪漫化，诗意化。

 

[罗琳曾经公然坦言，自己厌恶贫困。许多贫困的人自命清高，但是罗琳认定，贫穷让人无法高贵。

当生存出现危机的时候，人的动物性就表现得特别的强。这也就是贫民窟犯罪率高的原因。

肚子吃饱了才会想到去擦嘴。饿慌了的人才不管自己脸上干不干净。]

 

There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction;

“都是父母不好”这个借口迟早会过期的。

（我们总是要长大的，不可能一直怪罪父母替我们做出了错误的决定。）

 

expire 的意思是过期。大家可以留意一下很多进口食品包装上都会印有"EXP"字样，就是代表expire的意思。EXP后面的日期就是保质期到期的日子，不是生产日期哦。

steer的本意是驾驶。我们开车时候的方向盘就叫做steering wheel. 这里说父母亲"steering us in the wrong direction"，就是说父母握着我们的人生方向盘，把我们推到了错误的路上。

 

I had a knack for passing examinations, and that, for years, had been the measure of success in my life and that of my peers.

我很擅长考试。多年以来，考试分数一直是量度我和我的同龄人是否成功的标准。（应试教育的吧…）

 

have a knack for sth. 意思就是掌握了…的窍门，精于做…的意思。

peer指同龄人。英语中有一个词组叫"peer pressure"，来自同龄人的压力，或者说攀比压力。她有PS,我也要PS。她上补习班，我也要补课。她考剑桥，我就要去牛津。这些行为都可以说是peer pressure.

 

Talent and intelligence never yet inoculated anyone against the caprice of the Fates,

天赋和智慧总来不能让任何人免遭命运女神的摆布。

inoculate 这个动词比较专业，直译是“接种”或者说“注射疫苗”。

它的搭配是inoculate sb. against 某种疾病。给某人注射预防xx疾病的疫苗，让某人对xx疾病免疫，免遭xx疾病的侵袭。

这里说，天赋和智慧不能让人对“caprice of Fates(命运女神的变化无常)”免疫。意思就是无法让一个人免受命运的摆布。

  

 

You might be driven by a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for success.

对于成功的渴望，对于失败的恐惧，给了你们同样的向上的动力。

be driven by sth. 受到……的驱使

 

 

Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it.

（英语中用light at the other end of the tunnel，隧道另一头的亮光比喻逆境中的转机。现在罗琳说tunnel很长，也就是希望很远，很渺茫。）

 

 

Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged.

要是当时我真的在别的什么领域成功了，我大概就不会坚定不移地在自己认定的竞技场里顽强奋斗并且最终获胜了。（有的时候没有选择的人反而最专心）

arena, 竞技场，就是罗马角斗士拼杀的地方。罗琳说的the arena where I truly belonged, 我真正属于的竞技场，就是自己选定的、最擅长的领域。大家平时也可以说：

I chose economics as my major because I believe the business world is the arena where I truly belonged.(我选择经济学作为专业，因为我相信商业界是我真正所属的竞技场。)

 

 

 I was set free, because my greatest fear had already been realised, and I was still alive,

我感觉解脱了，因为我最害怕的事情已经发生了。而我没有被打倒，我仍然健在。

And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.

就这样，人生的低谷反而成了我重建生活的坚实地基。

rock bottom，铺满岩石的底部，就是我们说的“谷底”。

 It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.

一个人不可能一生没有一次失败。除非他小心谨慎到极点。但是与其这样战战兢兢活一辈子，不如索性不活。这样的人生，一开始就是注定失败的。

比如，you are so naive. you might as well be a baby.（你太幼稚了。你索性做个孩子好了）

 

 

 You will never truly know yourself, or the strength of your relationships, until both have been tested by adversity.

如果从未经历挫折的考验，你可能永远认不清你真正的自己，你可能永远看不准你真正的朋友。

adversity, 逆境。tested  by adversity, 受到逆境的考验

the strength of relationship, 本意是"关系的强度"，也就是指朋友是不是牢靠。

 

 

Given a time machine or a Time Turner, I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a check-list of acquisition or achievement.

给我一个时光机，或者一个时光转轮（azkaban的囚徒里面，赫敏脖子上的那个流沙瓶，可以倒转时间），我会告诉21岁的自己，当你认识到人生并不是一张历数个人成就和所得的清单，你才能获得一个人真正的幸福。

executive的意思是行政管理者，大家熟悉的CEO(首席行政官)，英语的全称就是chief executive officer.

每一天，我都看到越来越多证据，证明人类为了夺取力量或防止力量被别人夺取，会对自己的同伴做出何等邪恶的事情。

inflict sth. on sb, 把…施加在某人头上。这里说inflict evils on their fellow humans, 就是对自己的人类同伴施加暴行。

 

 

Ordinary people, whose personal well-being and security are assured, join together in huge numbers to save people they do not know, and will never meet.

那些自己生活衣食无忧的普通民众们，济济一堂，去拯救那些他们过去从未认识、将来也不会谋面的人们。

well-being,指幸福的小康的状态。people whose personal wellbeing and security are assured, 意思就是自己生活有保障的人

 

 

They can think themselves into other people's minds, imagine themselves into other people's places.

通过想象，人可以用别人的大脑思考。通过想象，人可以经历别人的生活。

 

 

They choose to remain comfortably within the bounds of their own experience, never troubling to wonder how it would feel to have been born other than they are.

他们局限在自己的世界里。他们从来不会操心去考虑，如果自己生来是另一个人，会是怎样一种感觉。

Within the bounds of, 在…的范围内。Boundary就是界限的意思。

 

 

they can close their minds and hearts to any suffering that does not touch them personally; they can refuse to know.

人生如戏。不在于长短，而在于是否精彩。

 

前半篇中，42岁的罗琳讲述了自己21岁的故事。罗琳年轻时候的生活可以说是一败涂地。但她本人却说，没有21岁的失败，就没有42岁的成功。她总结了失败的好处：（如果作文题目考到和failure有关的话题大家就可以尽情引用了！）

1，Failure in other fields helps one concentrate on the arena where they truly belong.（在其他领域的失败可以促使一个人把精力集中在自己真正属于的竞技场。）罗琳说，如果她在其他方面有成功的话，她可能就不会那么专心的写作了。

2，Failure enables a person to see who their real friends are and who they should stay away from.(失败让一个人看清谁是真正的朋友，谁是应该敬而远之的人。)罗琳说，这种认识，这种知人的本领，比任何的资格证书都宝贵。

3，Failure is catalyst for bravery.When a person has nothing to lose, he has nothing to fear. The rock bottom can become the foundation to rebuilt one's life.

(失败让一个人勇敢。一无所有的人，没有什么可失去的了，也就没有什么可以害怕的了。谷底可以成为重建生活的地基。)

 

后半篇中，罗琳强调了想象力的重要。想象力，在罗琳的字典里，是设身处地替别人着想的能力。罗琳年轻的时候，曾经在人道主义机构“大赦国际” (Amnesty International -- AI)工作，目睹了许多受到压迫、拘禁、虐待各种非人待遇的受害者，这一段经历对她产生了巨大影响。她说，那些暴力和惨剧，对于那些生活在和平发达国家的人来说，是闻所未闻的天方夜谭。只有通过想象，才能体会到处在他们的生活中是什么样的痛苦感觉，才知道怎么帮助他们是最好的。
