Chapter 1
The deep blue sea
Far out at sea, below the
waves, deeper and deeper and deeper still, stood the Sea King’s
castle.
There, at the very bottom of
the sea, the water was as clear as glass. The sand was as fine as
powder. Tall seaweed grew up around the castle walls and small,
bright fish darted among its branches.
The Sea King was very proud of
his castle. It was the perfect place to bring up his six mermaid
daughters.
Each daughter was given her own
small garden to care for.
“I’m going to shape mine like a
whale,” said the eldest.
“Mine will have a seashell
border,” said the next.
“And I’m going to grow pretty
flowers,” said the third.
The fourth and fifth mermaids
loved exploring. “Let’s decorate our gardens with treasure from
shipwrecks,” they said.
Then their little sister
appeared, hugging a statue of a smiling boy. “Look what I’ve
found!” she cried. “I’m going to put him in my
garden.”
The sisters spent all day in
the castle waters, tending their gardens and playing games. In the
evening, as the sea turned to inky black, their grandmother called
them inside for supper.
Mermaids!
Lying on silky cushions, the
family ate steaming seaweed parcels and soft sea
fruits.
“Tell us a story, Grandmama,”
begged the littlest mermaid.
Grandmama had seen the world
above the waves. She told amazing tales of men with two legs and no
tail.
“There are buildings as tall as
the ocean is deep,” she said, “and machines that glide even faster
than sharks.”
The little mermaid hung on her
every word.
“When you reach fifteen,”
announced the Sea King, “you may rise above the waves and see these
things for yourselves.”
While the older sisters flicked
their tails in delight, the little mermaid sat drumming her
fingers. “That’s six whole years away!” she sighed.
第一章
深蓝色的海
在遥远的大海上，碧波的深处，深处，再深处，屹立着一座雄伟的宫殿，那是海王的宫殿。
在那大海的最深处，水就像玻璃那么透明。海底的沙子就像爽身粉那么细腻。高高的水草在城墙的周围生长着，有着闪亮鱼鳞的鱼儿们就在这些水草间嬉戏追逐。
海王为自己的城堡感到很自豪。这是养育他六个美人鱼公主女儿最好的地方。
每个女儿都有自己的小花园，她们要自己打理自己的花园。
“我要把我的花园造成鲸鱼的形状。”最年长的美人鱼公主说。
“我的花园里将会被海贝围起来。”另一个说。
“我要在我的花园里种上漂亮的花。”第三个说道。
第四个和第五个女儿喜欢探索，“我们要用从发现的沉船里的那些宝藏来装饰我们的花园。”她们说道。
然后，她们的小妹妹出现了，她抱着一座带着微笑的男子的雕像。“看我找到了什么！”她喊道，“我要把它放在我的花园里。”
姐妹们一整天都在城堡的海水里，照料她们的花园和玩游戏。到了傍晚的时候，大海变成像墨水一样的黑色，她们的奶奶就喊她们进入城堡用晚餐。
“美人鱼们！”
坐在柔软的丝绸坐垫上，一家人吃着冒着热气的海草包和柔软的海果。
“给我们讲个故事吧，祖母，”最小的美人鱼公主请求道。
“他们的建筑高得就和大海一样深，”她说，“他们的机器能滑行得比鲨鱼还要快。”
小美人鱼认真地听着祖母的每一句话。
“当你到了15岁，你可以自己到海面上去玩耍和看各种新鲜事了。”海王说道。
当其他的姐妹们在一旁高兴地摇着自己的尾巴时，小美人鱼则在一旁数着自己的手指，叹着气说：“那还得等整整6年呢！”
