Chapter 5

The glass slipper

Cinderella ran home as fast as she could. She arrived just before her stepsisters.

“How was the Ball?” Cinderella asked.

“It was very grand,” said Griselda. “Far too grand for the likes of you.”

“I’m sure the Prince is in love with me.”

Cinderella smiled, but she said nothing. 

The next morning, the entire street was woken by the shout of a town crier, who was followed by a messenger.

By the order of his royal highness, the Prince, every girl in the kingdom must try on this glass slipper. The Prince will marry its true owner.

Cinderella’s stepmother flung open the front door and grabbed the messenger.

“One of my girls will fit this shoe,” she said proudly, “and then I’ll be queen.”

Griselda couldn’t even fit her big toe in the shoe. She pushed until her foot was bright red.

You stupid girl!

“Gives it to me!” shouted Grimella, and snatched the glass slipper from her sister. Grimella rammed half her foot in the shoe, but then it got stuck.

“Squeeze, Grimella,” shrieked her mother. “You’re not trying hard enough.” 

“I’m trying as hard as I can, Mama,” said Grimella, with a grunt.

Ow!

“You useless child,” cried her mother. She wrenched the slipper off Grimella’s foot and flung it at the messenger. ”Off you go then,” she snapped.

The messenger cleared his throat. “Excuse me, ma’am,” he said, “but my strict orders are that every young lady is to try on the shoe.” He looked directly at Cinderella.

What about this girl?

“What?” said Grimella. “She’s just a servant. You needn’t bother with her.”

Cinderella’s father coughed.

“Actually…” he began.

“Shut up you stupid man,” interrupted the stepmother.

“…Cinderella has as much right to try on the slipper as anyone,” he went on, bravely.

“Oh Papa!” said Cinderella. She walked over to the messenger and slipped on the shoe. It was a perfect fit.

“No!” shrieked Griselda and Grimella.

“She can’t be a princess,” shouted their mother. “I won’t allow it.”

“This is all your fault.”

“Get out!” she screamed at the messenger. “I want you to pretend this never happened.”

With one swift movement, the messenger swept off his hat and cloak. Everyone in the room gasped. It was the Prince.

You!

He strode over to Cinderella.

“I would have searched my kingdom for you,” he said, “Will you marry me?”

Cinderella smiled. “Oh, yes!” she replied.

At that moment, there was a puff of smoke and Felicity flew into the room.

She held her wand above her head and a starry mist swirled around them all. “Time for a little more magic,” she declared.

Felicity flicked her wand and gave Cinderella a dress even more beautiful than the one she had worn to the Ball.

Thank you!

“My princess!” said the Prince, and swept Cinderella off to his palace. Cinderella and the Prince were married the very next day… …and lived happily ever after.

Griselda and Grimella were not so happy.

We wanted to marry the Prince.

Their mother never stopped scolding them. “It’s all your fault for having such big feet,” she told them.

第5章

水晶鞋

灰姑娘以最快的速度跑回家。她仅比她的继姐妹回得早一些。

“舞会怎么样呢?”灰姑娘问道。

“简直太棒了，”格里赛尔达说。“对你这样的人来说，太豪华了。”

“我敢肯定王子爱上了我。”

灰姑娘微微一笑，但她什么也没有说。

第二天早上，整条街的人都被镇上的公告员的一声呼喊给叫醒，他后面还跟着一位信使。

根据王子殿下的命令，这个国家的每个女孩都必须试穿这只水晶鞋。王子将和水晶鞋真正的主人结婚。

灰姑娘的继母猛地打开前门，并抓住了信使。

“我的女儿中有一个会穿得上这只鞋的，”她骄傲地说，“然后我就会成为王后。”

然而格里赛尔达连她的大脚趾都塞不进鞋里去。她把脚一直向鞋里挤，直到脚都涨得通红。

“好蠢啊你!”

“给我!”格里梅拉嚷道，从她姐姐手里夺过水晶鞋。格里梅拉把她的半只脚伸进鞋里，然后就被卡住了。

“挤一挤，格里梅拉。” 她母亲尖叫道。“你还不够努力。”

“妈妈，我正在尽我最大的努力，”格里梅拉咕哝着说。

噢!

“你这个没用的孩子，”她母亲叫道。她把格里梅拉脚上的鞋拧了下来，然后扔向信使。“你走吧，”她厉声说。

使者清了清嗓子。“对不起，夫人，”他说，“我的严格命令是每位小姐都要试穿这只鞋。”他直视着灰姑娘。

这个女孩呢?

“什么?”格里梅拉说。“她只是个仆人。你不必理她。”

灰姑娘的父亲咳嗽。

“其实……”他开始说。

“闭嘴，你这个笨蛋，”继母打断他的话。

“……灰姑娘和任何人一样都有权利试穿这只水晶鞋，”他勇敢地接着说。

“噢，爸爸!”灰姑娘说。她走到信使面前，把鞋穿上。正好合适。

“不!” 格里赛尔达和格里梅拉尖叫道。

“她不可能是公主，”他们的妈妈喊道。“我不会允许的！”

“这都是你的错！”

“出去!” 她冲着信使尖叫。“我要你假装这一切从未发生过。”

信使飞快地脱下帽子和斗篷。房间里的每个人都都抽了一口气。原来信使就是王子。

王子大步地走向灰姑娘。

王子说:“我会为了找你而搜遍整个国家。你愿意嫁给我吗?”

灰姑娘笑了。“哦，我愿意!”她回答说。

就在这时，出现了一阵烟雾，费利西蒂飞进了房间。

她把魔杖举过头顶，一团繁星点点的薄雾围绕着他们。“是时候再施点魔法了！”她宣布。

费利西蒂轻轻地挥舞她的魔杖，便给了灰姑娘一条比她穿去舞会时的裙子更漂亮的裙子。

谢谢你！

“我的公主！”王子说道，然后就把灰姑娘带到了他的宫殿。紧接着的第二天，灰姑娘和王子便结婚了……并永远幸福地生活下去了。

格里梅拉和格里赛尔达却并不开心。

“我们想嫁给王子。”

她们的母亲从此以后一直责备着她们。“都怪你们长了只大脚！”她告诉她们。
