not far from a favorite restaurant of mine, where I often went to eat. I went into the restaurant and ordered my meal. While I was waiting for the soup to arrive I looked around to see if I knew anyone in the restaurant. It was then that I noticed that a man seated at a corner table kept glancing in my direction, as if he knew me. The man had a newspaper in front of him, which he was pretending to read. When the waiter brought my soup, the man was clearly puzzled by the familiar way in which the waiter and I addressed each other. He became more puzzled as time went on and it was obvious that I was well known in the restaurant. Eventually, he stood up and went into the kitchen . After a few minutes he came out again, paid the bill and left. Then I called the I called the owner of the restaurant and asked him what the man had wanted. Started in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest of all the colleges and universities in the United States. Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Dartmouth were established soon after Harvard.
In the early times, these schools were much alike. Only young men went to college. All the students studied the same subjects, and everyone learned Latin, Greek and Hebrew. Little was known about science then, and one kind of school could teach everything that was known about the world. When the students grabuated, most of them became ministers or teachers.
In 1782 , Harvard established a medical school for young men who dreamed to become doctors. Later, lawyers could receive their training courses in Harvard’s law school. In 1825, besides Latin and Greek, Harvard began modern languages, such as French and German. Soon it began teaching the American history.
As knowledge in creased, Harvard and other colleges began to teach many new subjects. Students were allowed to choose the subjects that interested them.
Today, there are many different kinds of colleges and universities. Most of them are made up of smaller schools that deal with special fields of learning. There’s so much to leam that one kind of school can’t offer it all.

Passage Three
It is quite clear that sleeping is necessary to everyone. If we don’t get enough sleep, we will feel tired.
Generally ,we have two kinds of sleep; active sleep and passive sleep. The passive sleep gives us the rest our bodies need, and prepares us for active sleep, in which dreaming appears. In passive sleep, the body is at relaxation. The heart slows down. We move little. And the brain becomes very inactive . If a person continues to sleep, the brain temperature rises, the amount of blood in the brain increases , the boby becomes very, very still, and the brain goes from being inactive to being active. And as the brain becomes more active the eyes begin to move rapidly. When the eyes begin to move, this is a sign of another change; the person is dreaming.
Throughout the night a person usually dreams for about one and a half hours. Many people say that they don’t dream or that they rarely dream.Doctors have studied the sleep and have found that everyone dreams. It appears that we need passive sleep in order to rest our bodies and need active sleep in order to rest our brains.

Many animals communicate ,or “talk” with sounds, smells , colors, body language, and other signals(信号)。Communication helps animals get along with each other and survive (生存).
For example ,honeybees do a dance that “tells” other bees where to find food. And birds sing songs that say,”This is my place,” Most scientists would say that this kind of “talking” is automatic and doesn’t any take thinking.
Other animals, such as wolves(狼) and whales(鲸), use many different sounds and signals. Are these animals able to tell each other what is on their minds ------the same way that people do with language?Do they think about what they’re “saying”? Some scientists think so , but most agree that there’s no way to tell for sure .
We know that human language takes thinking. So some scientists have tried to see what animals can do with our language. For example, a few apes(猩猩)have been taught sign language. The scientists who work with them say the apes seem to understand how the words work together. The apes sometimes even make up their own sentences. These could be clues(线索) that the animals are thinking .

When I was a young man, I used to walk there alone. One day while I was taking a walk, it began to rain,A terrific storm moved in very quickly, and I was quite worried. It was blowing like mad, trees were bending over, and lightening was crashing all over me. After wandering aimlessly for several hours, I found a cave inside the mountain. I was cold, wet , and sad so I went far into the back of the cave and lighted a match. To my surprise, I saw a large wooden chest with a strong iron lock. The lock was too thick for me to bresk, and the chest was too heavy for me to carry. Could there be jewels or golden coins inside? I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep. In the morning,I left and found my way home. I promised myself to return with tools to open the chest and get the treasure.

Passage three
In the past fifty years, the American society has changed a great deal. Fifty years ago, most Americans lived in small communities. They knew their neighbors at least by name if not by close relations. Life was so personal
That people often joked about it. They said that a person could mot even stay at home from church on Sunday without the whole town knowing about it .It was difficult and of community togetherness in such places.
Few people experience this type of lifelong relationship or sense of community togetherness now, The American society is much more unsettled ; people often move from neighborhood to neighborhood, city to city, and coast to coast , Because people move so frequently, they do not have a chance to get to know their neighbors. Perhaps this is also why Americans tend to have a impersonal society, people have lost the habit of saying hello to each other when they pass on the streets or in the hallways(过道)of their apartment building.
