今年，挂在里约热内卢（Rio de Janeiro）奥运获奖运动员胸前的奖牌将不同以往：巴西铸币厂为2016年夏奥会（Olympic Games）和残奥会（ Paralympic Games）所设计的金牌、银牌和铜牌都是用再生材料制成。
奖牌上当然要有希腊胜利女神（Nike）和其他传统象征，但制作女神的银材料来自废弃的镜子、剩余的焊锡、甚至是X光板胶片。回收的瓶子也被转化为编织奖牌缎带的原料之一。
那么金牌中的金子呢？它是从无毒水银中提取的。
在2016年残奥会上，视障运动员可以听见他们的奖牌。残奥会的奖牌将首次含小钢球，摇动时，它们会发出分别代表金、银、铜奖牌的不同声音。
现已共制出奖牌2488枚，其中金牌812枚，银牌812枚，铜牌864枚。
巴西国际奥委会主席卡洛斯·亚瑟·努兹曼（Carlos Arthur Nuzman ）6月14日在奖牌亮相仪式上说，“奖牌是奥运会最重要的象征之一，是世界上最美丽的东西”。
