Sogyal Rinpoche gave the spiritual name Lerab Ling (Sanctuary of Enlightened Action) to the centre, after his predecessor, the great nineteenth century Tibetan Buddhist master Lerab Lingpa Tertön Sogyal.

索甲仁波切赋予这座中心「雷瑞林」﹝证悟事业圣地﹞之名，这是以其前世 – 伟大的十九世纪藏传佛教上师 – 雷瑞林巴托顿索甲 – 来命名。

Situated on the remote Larzac plateau of the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France, Lerab Ling was founded in 1991 by Sogyal Rinpoche, and has become a living centre for the transmission of the authentic tradition of Buddhist teachings in Europe. It is Rinpoche’s greatest wish to bring these precious teachings, the ancient wisdom that is the timeless treasure of Tibet, to the world.

The Languedoc region has long been associated with a rich tradition of culture and spirituality, dating back to the ninth century when Christian abbeys and monasteries flourished in the area, and pilgrims crossed the plateau en route to the holy shrine of Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Since it opened in 1992, Lerab Ling has been blessed by visits from some of the greatest masters of our time.

In 2002, Lerab Ling was recognized by French Ministry of Interior decree as a Religious Congregation, confirming its status as an authentic spiritual organisation. The community at Lerab Ling comprises lay practitioners as well as ordained monks and nuns, who seek to apply the wisdom and compassion of the Buddhist teachings in all their activities.
