未名湖鲁斯亭雪景

    2012年12月14日，在校医院取完药后，来到未名湖边。雾气蒙蒙，积雪皑皑，银装素裹，如梦如幻。莘莘学子，繁忙课程之余，堆雪人，打雪仗，放松身心。湖心岛上的亭子引起我的格外注意。依稀记得刚毕业在北大任教时，这里地下室是北大工会的阅览室，我曾经在这里翻阅过图书。柱子上的铭牌写着“鲁斯亭”，激起我对于鲁斯的兴趣。

   根据饶毅的个人博客，  这里的鲁斯指的是Henry Winters Luce（1868-1941），中文名字鲁思义。为筹建燕京大学筹款，1919-1927任燕京大学副校长。Henry W. Luce是传教士，耶鲁大学1888年入学，1897年到山东传教，1917年任齐鲁大学副校长，1919至1927任燕京大学副校长。他先后为三个中国学校去美国筹款。他前后为燕京大学募集了二百余万美金的捐助，特别是得到当时美国铝业大王霍尔和石油大王洛克菲勒的捐献。他的四个子女全出生在中国。他的家族创立的鲁斯基金会至今都致力于中美文化教育的交流。他的子女直到第四代都是耶鲁大学的学生。设计燕京大学校园的亨利·墨菲(Henry Killam Murphy，1877–1954) ，1899年毕业于耶鲁大学。这位美国建筑师，主要的业绩都在中国，设计多个教会学校。在全面设计燕京大学以前，曾设计过清华园。以后为南京做过首都规划。燕京大学校长司徒雷登称“校舍本身就象征着我们办学的目的，也就是要保存中国最优秀的文化遗产。” 可以说，墨菲设计的燕京大学校园，做到了这一点。在今天的北京，燕园是中国文化遗产的一部分。

     北京大学的师生们，当你徜徉于如花似锦的未名湖边时，当你陶醉在湖光塔影的美丽风景中时，请你们铭记这位美国的传教士-鲁斯，记住鲁斯基金会。

Henry W. Luce

Henry W. Luce graduated from Yale University in 1892. After graduation, he stayed at Union Seminary in New York for 2 years, before his seminary training at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1896.^[1]

Luce was ordained in 1897 and sent to China by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions in the same year. In total, he spent 31 years in the country, where his four children, including Henry R. Luce, were born.^[2]

Luce was a professor at Cheeloo University in Jinan,^[1] China, where he led fundraising efforts^[1] and served as vice president for a short time. He also helped to initiate the Yale-in-China Association.^[1] In 1928, he accepted a professorship at the Kennedy School of Missions in Hartford, Connecticut. He held this position until his retirement in 1935 .^[1]

Luce Memorial Chapel, designed by I.M. Pei and situated on the campus of Tunghai University, Taichung, Taiwan, is named after Henry W. Luce. Construction of the chapel was sponsored by Henry R. Luce.
