Man, the imperial shape, then multiplied

男人，帝皇般的身形风范，
His generations under the pavilion
在阳光御座：金字塔和宫殿—

the Sun’s throne: palace and pyramid,

一代又一代的子孙在此繁衍，
Temple and prison, to many a swarming million

面向芸芸众生的是监狱、寺院，

Were, as to mountain-wolves their ragged caves.

至于嶙峋洞穴的山野豺狼。
This human living multitude

这生生不息的人类群氓—
Was savage, cunning, blind, and rude,

野蛮、狡诈、粗俗和鲁莽，
For thou wert not; but o’er the populous solitude,

而你未来临；却在拥挤的荒原上，
Like one fierce cloud over a waste of waves,

象一片残云覆盖着一片汪洋，

Hung Tyranny; beneath, sate deified

The sister-pest①, congregator of slaves;

 野蛮，粗暴，诡谲而愚昧，①

 因为你尚未诞生; 在这万姓麇集的荒原，

 像狰狞的乌云笼罩着空旷的荒原，

 专制的暴政高悬在上：下面

盘踞着奴隶收集者—被尊为神的瘟疫姑娘：②

依仗金钱和鲜血维持生命，

 血腥和铜臭浸透灵魂的教士和【暴君】

 则从四面八方把那受惊的人群

 驱赶进她那宽阔翅膀的阴影。

①雪莱又认为没有自由也就不能发展理性，而人类的野蛮、

粗暴、诡谲和愚昧，则是暴君和教会双重奴役的后果。

②瘟疫姑娘，指宗教。
