At the time of its construction, Hart Plaza was seen as Detroit’s hope for the revitalization of its declining downtown fortunes. Designed in the 1960’s without the wisdom and insight that we now possess on the forces that contribute to the successes or failure of urban public open spaces, the space never lived up to its civic expectations and slowly fell into decline and abandonment. Except for some large civic celebrations and programmed events, these six acres of prime downtown open space on the river lay vacant. A new vision plan for Detroit’s three mile east riverfront prepared by Thomas Balsley Associates and Cooper Robertson Partners, the dramatic transformation of the Renaissance Plaza into GM world headquarters, and an emerging downtown residential community have all brought new forces on Hart Plaza as the site for a new vibrant civic plaza and green that will help define the new downtown Detroit. The abandoned Ford Auditorium will be replaced with a new outdoor riverfront performance pavilion. New restaurants and cafes, interactive fountains, market promenades, and large lawn areas will serve a broad constituency throughout the year and connect directly to the city’s new river walk and cruise ship terminal. Hart Plaza will become the city’s new centerpiece, where office workers, shoppers, residents and visitors will meet one another to celebrate city life.
