ICELT Overview
The In-service Certificate in English Language Teaching (ICELT) focuses on the knowledge and skills needed by working teachers.
ICELT will help you:
- increase your knowledge of teaching English
- develop your ability to evaluate and improve your teaching.
Because ICELT is flexible, course programmes can be designed to reflect your own teaching context. All courses cover the following areas:
- language awareness and language use in the classroom
- planning, teaching and self-evaluation
- assessment.
Whatever your context, ICELT will increase your confidence as a teacher and help you progress in your career.

Who is ICELT for?
Because ICELT is so flexible, there is no typical ICELT candidate, but perhaps you:
- want to develop your knowledge and skills of English language teaching
- teach younger learners in the private sector, groups of adults in a university environment, classes of primary or secondary students in state schools or adults in the private sector
- have been working in primary/secondary schools for many years but don’t have a qualification in teaching English
- are returning to language teaching after a break and need to refresh your skills
- completed a pre-service teacher training course but need to develop further
- have a lot of experience of teaching but have just started teaching English
- have a teacher training qualification that didn’t include any assessed teaching
What Does ICELT Involve?
ICELT has seven units of learning:
- Language knowledge and awareness
- The background to teaching and learning English
- Resources and materials
- Planning and management of teaching and learning
- Evaluation, monitoring and assessment
- Professional development
- Language for teachers.
ICELT courses:
- are offered part time (from a few months to over a year)
-
are available as
face-to-face
programmes or face-to-face with distance learning support - include a minimum of 120 contact and/or distance learning support hours.
ICELT courses include:
- input on a range of practical skills and the principles behind these
- ‘live’ teaching practice
- observation of experienced teachers
- four practical written assignments
- four language tasks
- four assessed lessons.
Assessment for ICELT is in two
modules. You can take Module One only or progress to Module Two to
get the full ICELT qualification.
Module One
Language for Teachers (Assessment 1)
You complete four to six tasks to improve your use of English for
teaching purposes. The number of tasks depends on whether you are
taking Module One on its own or in combination with Module
Two.
Module Two
1. Teaching (Assessment 2)
You plan, teach and evaluate four lessons. These lessons are
normally with your own classes. Each is assessed by your course
tutor.
2. Methodology (Assessment 3)
You complete four written assignments related to the classroom. The
assignments are assessed by your course tutor.
Each course is visited by a Cambridge moderator who moderates your
coursework. Samples are sent to Cambridge for further moderation at
the end of your course.
Grading and results
You are graded by your course tutor and your work is moderated by
Cambridge English Language Assessment. You receive a grade for each
assessment component and an overall grade for the ICELT
qualification. The grades are Pass, Merit or
Distinction.
