Seventy-four-year-olds are the most contented people in the population, according to new research. Fewer responsibilities, financial worries and more time to you leading to contentment(满足) previously unknown in earlier life. According to the report from the teenage years until 40 happiness declines. It levels off until peaking at 74.

The report, published in the journal Social Indicators Research, said this could be due to older people being more appreciative(感激的). It concluded:” Compared to younger individuals, older people tend to place a greater emphasis on emotional aspects of social interactions and are likely to remember the emotional content of their experiences.” Bring up a family, buying a house and creating a career added to the stresses experienced by those in their twenties and thirties.

The change in happiness was apparently most pronounced amongst British respondents(回答者,调查对象). German men and women reported relatively stable levels of satisfaction throughout their lives. Dr Carlo Strenger, from Tel Aviv University, said:” If you make fruitful use of what you have discovered about yourself in the first half of your life, the second half can be the most fulfilling. Most people can anticipate(预期) a second life, if not a second career.”

Let’s talk:

If 74 is the happiest time in our life, do you think it is too late? If you think so, how do you experience your life? please have a see.

2012.5.16Study: people taking stairs expected to live longer研究:上下班走楼梯有益于身体健康

http://s16/middle/668968d6gc48cc3763c2f&690

Key wordsescalators 自动扶梯

******************************************************************

People taking the stairs instead of elevator(电梯) at work can expect to live longer. It could decrease mortality(死亡数) risk y 15 percent. Banning the use of lifts and escalators(自动扶梯) led to better fitness, less body fat, trimmer waistlines and a drop in blood pressure, the study found.

For the study, 77 employees from Geneva University(日内瓦大学) with a sedentary(久坐的) lifestyle were recruited(招聘) to take only the stairs over a three-month period, Swissinfo reported. Results showed an increase in aerobic capacity(有氧能力), a decline in waist circumference(周长), weight, fat mass(脂肪含量), blood pressure and cholesterol(胆固醇).

This suggests that stair climbing can have major public health implications. It provides a practical way for busy working people to increase their exercise capacity.

Although the amount of exercise appears small, the benefits were clear in improving physical fitness and reducing body fat and blood pressure.

Let’s talk:

Do you take exercise every day?

Key wordsthe fountain of youth容颜永驻

******************************************************************

The age of 28 has been pinpointed(已被确认为) as the time in a woman’s life their hair looks the best, body shape is at its peak and confidence is at an all-time high.

It is also the period in their life when they enjoy the best sex- but the happiness is relatively short-lived.

But all is not lost for the over 30s, as women feel most content with their financial situation at 33 and at ease with their home and family life at 32. The research found two thirds of women feel they age more quickly than men. it also emerged(出现) that 56 percent of women worry about losing their looks as they get older. But drinking from the fountain of youth(容颜永驻) doesn’t come cheap as the average woman will spend £600 every year on beauty products in a bid to stay looking young.

The research also found women spend over five days a year on their beauty routine- an average of 22 minutes every day.

Let’s talk:

Are you in the 28-year-old now?

2012.5.18The Formula for Happiness】幸福方程式

http://s11/middle/668968d6gc48ccf61937a&690

Key wordsadaptability 适应性,适合性

******************************************************************

Do you know what happiness is? How to measure it?

A pair of British researchers said 1st June they had worked out a simple equation to quantify happiness that could put an exact figure on the emotional state.

After interviewing 1000 people, the researchers – a psychologist and a self-styled “life coach”——concluded that happiness equals P+5E+3H.

In the equation, P stands for Personal Characteristics (outlook on life, adaptability(适应性,适合性) and resilience(恢复力,弹力); E for Existence(health, friendships and financial stability) and H represents(代表) Higher Order(self-esteem, expectations and ambitions). The scientists asked interviewees——a mix of men and women all over 18 years old——to choose five scenarios(情节) that made them more happy or less happy from a list of 80 different situations. They also asked a series of questions about their own natures, outlooks and situations.

Not surprisingly, the results showed that men and women found happiness in different ways. Sunny weather, being with family and losing weight were more of an influence on women’s happiness, while romance, sex, hobbies and victories by their favorite sports teams were more important to men.

The study was commissioned(委任) by a holiday company that wanted to understand what made people happier.

Let’s talk:

Do you think happiness could be described as the nine words?

2012.5.19Nice guys really do finish last: how selfish and aggressive personalities are most likely to be promoted at work研究:自私的人更容易当领导

http://s10/middle/668968d6gc48cd66547c9&690

Key wordsgullible 易受骗的

******************************************************************

It is not likely to win you any popularity contests, but it seems being selfish at work can be good for your career. New research has found that those with more selfless, kind personalities were the most well-liked, but were simultaneously(同时地) seen as less attractive candidates for leadership and were overlooked for promotion.

The results showed that those with the kinder personalities were the most popular in the groups, but they were also considered weak or gullible(易受骗的). Those with more dominant(占优势的) and aggressive behavior were seen as ‘alpha’ personalities. He explained:” Being selfish makes you seem more dominant and being dominant makes you seem more attractive as a leader, especially when there’s completion. ‘On a subconscious(潜意识的) level this is the conclusion people are coming to: Kingness equals weakness.”

Dr Livingston believes that this tendency(倾向) to associate aggression with leadership is an explanation(说明,解释) on why we get corruption(贪污,腐败). “People who are more likely to be moral, kind and pro-social(居前,领先) are least likely to be elected to these leadership roles,” he said.

That increases the likelihood of corruption and malfeasance because we’ve got the wrong people in positions of leadership.”

Let’s talk:

Are you a selfish person?

2012.5.20 Do you work overtime today?今天,你加班吗?

 http://s6/middle/668968d6g7a0e177239c5&690

Key wordsget laid off 被解雇,被裁员

******************************************************************

As for the workers, the most disliked words are. But, most of people have to work overtime so as to make a good impression.

1. Would you work overtime today?

2. We are paid double time for working after 5:00pm.

3. We get extra time off in lieu of(代替) payment for working overtime.

4. I need to finish up(完成,结束) this project I've been working on. So I guess I am going to work through the night.

5. We all need some down time(停工时间,停机时间).

6. You know how you have to "defragment(重组)" your computer? Well, sometimes our brains need some defragmenting, too!

7. I want the boss to notice my devotion(奉献,忠诚)! The economy is not great these days and I don't want to get laid off(被解雇,被裁员)!

8. Nothing pisses me off(气死我了) more than having to stay late and work unpaid overtime.

9. All week I'd planned to leave work early to go to the ball game. But the boss just threw a monkey wrench(活动扳手) into my plans -- he asked me to stay late to finish up a special report for him.

10. If you add up(合计) all the vacation time and comp(排版) hours I have, I have a lot of time.

Let’s talk:

Yes, I have the same question: do you work overtime today?

2012.5.21Being yourself at work is not good for your career, study claims研究:展现真我不利职场发展

http://s11/middle/668968d6gc48ceb74775a&690

Key wordsauthentic  真正的

******************************************************************

Honesty is often said to be the best policy in social situations but being yourself at work is not a good idea for your career, research suggests. While revealing(揭示) your true character to a partner of friends is likely to make you happier, experts claim doing so at the office is not a recipe(食谱,秘诀) for promotion.

Scientists assessed levels of “authentic (真正的) self expression” in 533 volunteers to see how far they opened up to people they interacted with(与相互作用) socially. The results showed that participants were more likely to ‘”be themselves” with parents. However, they were much less likely to show their true self to work colleagues. Those who opened up to their partners tended to have greater well-being and were more satisfied with life. But the same benefits were not seen from being authentic at work.

“So in some circumstances(情况), it may be that a polite smile or tactfully(巧妙地,机智地) keeping quiet may be more conducive(有益的) to your well-being than saying what you actually think and feel to work colleagues.
