集美是厦门市的文教区，福建省著名的旅游风景区；

那么，位于集美龙舟池畔的集美中学更是被称为嘉庚风格建筑的典范，南薰楼就是其中之一。

南薰楼，由主楼及两侧翼楼组成，呈Y字形，共有15层，高54米，于1957年6月建成。“南薰”二字取自《诗经·南风歌》里的“南风之薰兮，可以解吾民之愠兮”，寓意陈嘉庚先生“教育兴国，科学兴国”的伟大理想。

从外观上看，整座南薰楼的楼身为西式风格，而屋顶又为中式方亭，塔楼顶部有“集美”二字。南薰楼的建筑设计，蕴含着陈嘉庚先生强烈的民族精神和深厚的爱国热情。
