音乐剧《猫》的首次演出在1981年。它改编自T.S.Eliot(艾略特)的长诗<</SPAN>擅长装扮的老猫经〉>（Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats）。原诗几乎是原文全部搬过去成为歌词。由世界著名的英国音乐剧作曲家安德鲁·劳埃德·韦伯（Andrew·Lloyd·Webber）谱曲。
《猫》中脍炙人口的歌曲《回忆》（Memory），在剧中由老猫格瑞泽贝拉演唱，当衣衫褴褛的她出场时，所有的猫咪都敬而远之、甚至落井下石。她以这首歌回忆昔日的风光，歌词中描写她虽然从一只出入上流社会的美丽猫咪，变成了连同类都不屑一顾的落魄老猫，但是她却能从中了解幸福的真谛。
《回忆》之所以能获得人们的热爱，并不仅仅在于旋律和歌词本身，而在于它还能够用一首歌诠释人生。记忆中或有兴奋，或有痛苦，或有感动，或有悲伤，或有喜悦，或有失望，或有清晰，或有模糊…，而最美好的记忆最使人难以忘怀。但愿能像艺术家捕捉灵感、音乐家捕捉记录天籁之声的音符、文学家捕捉美文那样从此定格，把曾有过的销魂蚀骨之喜的时分清晰地定格在记忆当中！而当茕茕孑立，形影相吊时，回忆会送上一丝温暖，一种力量。正当社会转型、人情淡漠的年代，只有动人的回忆之歌能淡化忧伤、痛苦，点燃心中的希望之火，重新对生活充满渴望。
《猫》首演时由伊莲•佩姬（Elaine Paige 1948——）担任主角老猫格瑞泽贝拉主题曲memory也是伊莲•佩姬的保留曲目。但犹太女孩芭芭拉•史翠珊（Barbra Streisand 1942——）演唱的memory似是更为动人难忘。下面录入歌词共同分享。
