PhD Studentship in

Heterogeneous Catalysis

The Department of Chemical Engineering at University College London (UCL) is seeking an enthusiastic Graduate Student to work on the general area of Heterogeneous Catalysis. The PhD studentship, held in Dr. Feng Wang’s group, includes yearly oversea tuition plus monthly stipend. The group is particularly interested in the conversion of natural gas and biomass into olefin, gasoline and fine chemicals.

Qualifications (What is expected from your side)

  • Bachelor or Master degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials or any other related discipline
  • Thorough understanding of thermodynamics/kinetics or Schlenk line operation
  • 2:1 (UK grading system) or 3.2 (GPA), 6.5 IELTS

Research projects (What you will work on, one or several from the following list)

  • Surface single site catalyst for water gas shift reaction
  • Methanol synthesis from CO2
  • Polymeric catalysts for biomass conversion and fine chemical synthesis
  • In situ spectroscopy
  • Spray pyrolysis for catalyst preparation

Training process (What you can expect during the study)

  • Systematic training from a graduate student to an independent researcher, including lab work, writing paper and manuscript, field work, conference, competitions and etc.
  • Short term academic stay at  Max-Planck-Institute in Germany, ETH Zurich, EPFL Lausanne, DTU Denmark or other collaborators
  • Collaborations and connections with our following industrial partners, including Johnson Matthew (UK), Shell (The Netherlands), BASF (Germany), Evonik (Germany), Haldor Topsoe (Denmark) and Exxon Mobile (United States)

Outcome (What you can expect after the study)

  • PhD degree in Chemical Engineering in UCL
  • A faculty position in top universities or a postdoc position in world class catalysis group
  • Or an engineer/scientist position in the aforementioned companies

Application: The potential candidates can send CV together with contact information of three references to Dr. Feng Wang via ryanwang@kofo.mpg.de (小编注:邮箱暂用德国老邮箱,大家不要误解). Interviews will be scheduled in early September in Peking University. The positions will be open until filled.

About the PI: Dr. Feng Wang will join the Chemical Engineering Department at UCL as a Lecturer in August 2015. He is currently an Alexander von Humboldt Researcher at Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung. He obtained Ph.D. and B.S. degree in Chemistry in Peking University. The major focus in his group is the understanding of surface catalysis process and the exploration of catalytic reactions for natural gas and biomass conversion. About UCL: University College London (http://www.ucl.ac.uk), is a public research university in London. Founded in 1826 as London University, UCL was the first university institution established in London and the first in England to be entirely secular, to admit students regardless of their religion, and to admit women on equal terms with men. UCL is considered to be one of the most prestigious universities in the world and ranks highly in league tables; it is 21st in the world in the 2014 US News Ranking of World Universities, joint 5th in the world in the 2014 QS World University Rankings and 22nd in the world in the 2014/15 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. For the period 1999 to 2009 it was the 13th most-cited university in the world (and most-cited in Europe). There are 32 Nobel Prize winners and three Fields Medalists amongst UCL's alumni and current and former staff. UCL alumni include the "Father of the Nation" of each of IndiaKenya and Mauritius, the inventor of the telephone, and one of the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA. All five of the naturally-occurring noble gases were discovered at UCL by William Ramsay.

About UCL Chemical Engineering (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/chemeng): Situated in the heart of London on the main campus of UCL, the department is one of the top research and teaching Chemical Engineering departments in the UK, achieving world class standing. Research is a major departmental activity with 90% of staff rated as world leading or of internationally excellent quality in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) carried out by HEFCE.

Sir William Ramsay was the first head of the department and first Professor of Chemical Engineering in UK. Other notable former staffs include A. J. V. Underwood who developed Underwood-Fenske equation in distillation and Philip C. Carman who developed the Kozeny–Carman equation in fluid dynamics.
