The table above was compiled from the PlaneCrashInfo.com accident database and represents 1,015 fatal accidents involving commercial aircraft, world-wide, from 1950 thru 2010 for which a specific cause was known. Aircraft with 18 or less passengers aboard, military aircraft , private aircraft and helicopters were excluded.

"Pilot error (weather related)" represents accidents in which pilot error was the cause but brought about by weather related phenomena. "Pilot error (mechanical related)" represents accidents in which pilot error was the cause but brought about by some type of mechanical failure. "Other human error" includes air traffic controller errors, improper loading of aircraft, fuel contamination and improper maintenance procedures. Sabotage includes explosive devices, shoot downs and hijackings. "Total pilot error" is the total of all three types of pilot error (in yellow). Where there were multiple causes, the most prominent cause was used.

WikiBase - Add and edit accidents yourself
Yes, you can add accidents and incidents to the ASN WikiBase yourself! Or you can correct or update existing accidents. You can add any aviation accident or incident you like: general aviation, military, helicopters etc. As long as they are not covered in the main ASN Safety Database.

Every entry or correction is being reviewed before it appears online.
The WikiBase is currently in an experimental phase. New features will be added during the course of 2008.

An aviation accident is defined by the Convention on International Civil Aviation Annex 13 as an occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft, which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight until all such persons have disembarked, where a person is fatally or seriously injured, the aircraft sustains damage or structural failure or the aircraft is missing or is completely inaccessible.[1] If the accident includes damage to the aircraft such that it must be written off, or in which the plane is destroyed. it is further defined as a hull loss accident.[2]

The first fatal aviation accident was the crash of a Rozière balloon near Wimereux, France, on June 15, 1785, killing its inventor Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier as well as the other occupant, Pierre Romain.[3] The first involving a powered aircraft was the crash of a Wright Model A aircraft at Fort Myer, Virginia, USA, on September 17, 1908, injuring its co-inventor and pilot, Orville Wright, and killing the passenger, Signal Corps Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge.[4]

Fleet Information for Selected U.S. Carriers

Each link produces the airlines FAA certificate and fleet information from the FAA's National Vitals Information System. Any airline with a regional subsidiary will have the airlines that make up that subsidiary in parentheses.
