    凤头：体大(50厘米)而外形优雅的。颈修长，具显著的深色羽冠，下体近白，上体纯灰褐。繁殖期成鸟颈背栗色，颈具鬃毛状饰羽。与赤颈的区别在脸侧白色延伸过眼，嘴形长。

    指名亚种为地区性常见鸟，广布于较大湖泊。为部分型候鸟。

    繁殖期成对作精湛的求偶炫耀，两相对视，身体高高挺起并同时点头，有时嘴上还衔着植物。
