关于“激情的心智”，作者在介绍中说：
I am interested in having you listen so that perhaps you can
decide for yourself whether what is being said is true or not true
for you. But you can only do this if you are listening, which
involves an openness, an innocence, and a passionate
mind. Real passion occurs only when there is
a giving up of oneself, an abandonment. Only in passion is there a
quality of attention fundamental to learning. You
really have to care about seeing (in this case it is seeing
yourself) and this never involves agreement or
disagreement...
我关心的是使你留神听我讲的话，那样也许你能够自己来决定我讲的话对你来说是否正确。但是你首先必须要倾听，而要做到这一点，需要一种开放的心胸，一种纯真，一颗激情的心智。真正的激情只有在一个人放弃自我时才能够产生。只有在激情中才存在着一种品质的注意力，拥有这种品质是学习的基础。你必须真正地想要理解（在这里它指的是看清自我），而且决不意味着简单地同意或不同意。
全书共分12个章节，每个章节讨论一个话题。
