Discuss the effect of alcohol abuse on the
individuals and community what should parents, school and
government do?
There is evidence that alcohol abuse has risen in Australia in the last 20 years. Consistent over consumption including addiction to alcohol among young and old Australian are a growing concern. Binge drinking among young adults are also a worrying sign indicating that alcohol abuse has risen. Parents and government need to act separately and together to solve the problem.
There are social health and financial effects on the individual alcohol abuser. Alcohol has effects on social behavior causing family issues such as bad parenting and domestic violence. It can also have an effect on a person’s job causing poor performance. It may also lead to job loss. It could also cause legal issues such as assault and drink driving charges. Alcohol abuser can also develop health problems. Mental health issues such as memory loss and violent conduct are common. Physical health issues such as liver and heart disease, physical injury, physical inability are being seen in younger and younger people. Alcohol abuse is one of the biggest cause of death through drowning, car accident and so on. Even indirect sexual issues can be caused by alcohol abuse especially people of young age such as pregnancies and sexual diseases through unprotected sex. People of young age can develop violent behavior through alcohol abuse. Alcohol abuse can also cause financial issues to the individual and their families. Families may not be able to pay for household bills. These are the social & financial effects of alcohol abuse.
The community must pay the cost of health, law enforcement and family breakdown which are the results of alcohol abuse. The cost to health is government having to fund higher hospital bills. Community may also need to fund the bills for life or long periods in hospital after car accident. It can also cause personal injury and may even lead to disability. Death through road accidents can also happen through alcohol abuse especially among young people. The community must also pay for law enforcement issues such as having to employ more police on the street. Violence conduct will lead individuals to having to attend court. Legal aid must also be provided at court. These are the cost the community must pay for law enforcement. The cost to the society due to alcohol abuse is family breakdown issues. Higher funding by the government for family courts is needed. Family members may be subject to domestic violence by alcoholic. As such, the government will have to spend more funds on safe houses for these victims and counseling centers for alcoholics. There are also cost to repair and to clean up public properties damaged by alcoholics. The above shows the high cost involve due to alcohol abuse.
Parents have an important
role to play in educating the young people to avoid alcohol abuse.
Parents must act as role models to young people. Parents often view
that alcohol problem is not as bad as drug problem yet there are
more young people drinking than taking drugs. Young people often
said they have been given alcohol by their parents. Parents must
change this kind of attitude. Parents need to keep a close eye on
their children for alcohol abuse and drinking habits.
Schools have a
responsibility to educate students about the effects of alcohol
abuse. This is to overcome the lack of knowledge among young people
on alcohol abuse. Young people have a view that alcohol abuse is
not a problem. Schools can hand out leaflets to students and their
parents. This is to provide information on the danger of alcohol
abuse. There should also be posters and advertisements in all
schools showing the bad effect of alcohol abuse. Schools can
organize drama base on sad stories of alcohol abuse with school
children getting involve.
The government has an important role to play in this problem. Stricter law on drinking outlets such as shorter trading hours, higher fines and penalties to those outlets that breached alcohol related offences must be impose. Government can impose higher tax on alcohol both domestically and for the importation of alcohol. This will lead to higher cost of buying alcohol and may reduce the amount of alcohol a person will drink. Government must also run more public health campaign such as drink driving and social issues related to alcohol abuse. This is to create awareness the danger of alcohol abuse.
Alcohol companies have a
social responsibility as well in this matter. The industry must
also take into account of public health and not just the financial
gains from selling alcohol. Finally, the community has to take this
matter more seriously is a major health and social issue. If the
community plays its role by abiding the law, we will be able to see
that alcohol abuse cases will start to decrease in
Australia.
