March 9, 2011
Pluto squares my Mercury…Awareness is a strange thing.

Do we even know what it is? I think I have awareness about my life, awareness of who I am and what I’m doing with my life. For forty-one years, whenever I have questioned my motivations or doubted myself, I have relied upon astrology for insight and guidance. Yesterday this astrologer was in the midst of deep anxiety about where I am in my life and what I am doing. Once again I was examining myself in the light of astrology as I strode along the crowded sidewalks of Beijing, lost in thought but careful when crossing the street!

When I first came to China in 2010 I found many mostly young people who seemed so interested in astrology, so fascinated – even enthusiastic. It reminded me of my own youth, coming of age in the late 1960’s and early 70’s in America – lots of young people searching for answers, looking for truth. In such a social atmosphere I had first discovered astrology – reading my first astrology books in the spring of 1970 at the age of nineteen. Yes, this was long ago…

From that time to this, much of my life has been devoted to the study and practice of astrology; though I didn’t open my practice until January 1976 and it would be two more years before I could begin to rely upon my practice as my primary means of financial support. I was able to create a modestly successful life, building a practice of clients who still consult me, along with many of their family members. I have spent 36 years building and maintaining my astrology practice, and belatedly ceased taking new clients early last year. Regardless of how one measures success, I have experienced fulfillment, which has meant more to me than any measure of success. Even on the worst days of my life when caring for my dying father or struggling with any of life’s upsets and disappointments, I could go to my office and do a session for a client and feel better afterwards. I used to joke to myself that I should pay them, instead of the other way around!

In sessions with clients each and every day I would experience some joy. There is nothing like wrestling with life’s challenges and helping people to discover more fulfilling ways to live. To see the light go on in someone’s eyes when they understand something important about themselves or open to new possibilities in their life is a remarkable sensation. To later hear how they acted upon their new awareness and how it made all the difference in their life – what could compare to this? Such work sustained me. Maybe I’ve helped some people find a better way to be themselves, but they helped me too! I have learned from every client, for me and for others.

Yet there were disappointments along the way. So enthralled was I with astrology as a student those first four or five years, I was perplexed as to why it wasn’t taught in schools, or in colleges and universities. “Surely,” I remember thinking, “astrology will become mainstream in ten years; soon there will be a degree program in academia.” Likewise I imagined that everyone in society would be using astrology openly within a brief time. However, I was young and naïve; I did not grasp how long it can take for established patterns of society to change. It would be twenty-five years before astrology would even “begin” to find accredited acceptance in academia – and this saga is still underway. Nonetheless, millions more westerners use astrology for personal growth and guidance now that 40 years ago, and this is due to the dedicated work of a relatively small number of serious hardworking professional astrologers – with current estimates of some 3,000 full-time practicing astrologers in the USA and perhaps another several thousand practicing astrologers in the western world. Many more astrologers are part time, or life-long students, researchers, or even hobbyists.

My first disappointment as an astrologer came in 1977, when I attempted to organize a seminar with astrologer Noel Tyl to be held at Georgia State University Business School in Atlanta. Despite the fact that Atlanta had legally defined Astrology in 1970 in the City of Atlanta Ordinance as a profession “separate” from “fortune telling,” requiring the passing of an eight hour written examination to obtain a license to practice astrology, there were some professors that objected to this seminar and we were forced to cancel it. With the support of a leading Georgia State professor I appealed to the Dean of the College Noah Langdale, pointing out that astrologer Noel Tyl had a degree from Harvard University in Social Relations (Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology). Yet the opposition was vehement and our appeal was denied.

I remember being quite angry and embarrassed, though at the time Noel Tyl was very consoling and supportive. He reminded me that prejudice against astrology was rooted in basic misunderstandings of the field. “People make judgments based on their assumptions,” I remember him telling me. “If they don’t realize their assumptions are incorrect they naturally assume they are justified in their beliefs and actions.” Noel’s point underscored my desire to address these false assumptions. “They don’t realize yet how modern astrology has evolved. They have yet to grasp the psychological and sociological applications and benefits of our field.” I can still hear Noel’s words ringing in my ear during our phone conversation that day, thirty-five years ago. Since that time I have actively addressed assumptions about astrology at every opportunity, eager to dispel misconceptions and correct misinformation.

In addition to my day-to-day practice of astrology, from 1977 on I pursued every public forum that came my way on radio, TV and in print – letting others know what modern astrology was really about. Eventually I would produce and host a local TV program in Atlanta called “Astrology Today,” from 1989 – 1991, featuring guests every week that used astrology in their lives in practical ways, be they therapists, business people or other professional astrologers. Always my focus was on the application of astrology in everyday life – in career, relationships, family and especially personal growth. In fact, my philosophy of astrology as a tool for greater self-awareness and personal growth was not unique to me but was and is a belief shared by me and most practicing western astrologers.
