有关“吹牛,说大话”类的词汇

—He exaggerated the danger of the trip in order to frighten them into not going.   
     为了恐吓他们不去旅行,他夸大了旅行的危险。

—The reports were greatly exaggerated.     报告被严重夸大了。

— He blows too much.     他好吹牛。

—You have to blow your own trumpet sometimes—no one else will do it for you.   
     有时候你必须自我吹嘘一下,没有人会替你那样做的。
—He is an agreeable fellow, but likes to blow his own horn. 
     他是一个随和的人,但就是喜欢自吹自擂。
* blow-hard [55bl[UhB:d]  n.  (美)自吹自擂者
—I do not want to sit next to that old blowhard.     我不想坐在那个爱自吹自擂的老人旁边。
2. boast [5b[Ust] v. (常用词;既可用于好的意义上,也可用在坏的意义上) 夸口;吹嘘
—He enjoyed boasting of his wealth.    他喜欢夸耀自己的财富。
* boast  n.  引以为夸耀的事情
—Joe made good his boast to swim across the lake.   乔夸口要游过湖去,他果然做到了。
* boastful [5b[Ustfl] adj.  好自夸的;自吹自擂的
—We all got drunk and became very loud and boastful.

20. sound [5saund] v.  吹牛;夸大
—Has he been sounding off about his golf game again?          
    他是不是在对他的高尔夫比赛吹大牛呢?           
21. to draw the long bow  [5drC: 5lCN 5b[U]   说大话;吹大牛
—We can't believe him that he alway draws the long bow.我们不能相信他,他总是吹牛。
22. to make a drama out of sth. [5meik 5drB:m[ aut [f]   夸大其词
—We won't make a drama out of a crisis.    我们不会把危机夸大其词。
23. to pile it on [5pail Cn]   (口)夸张 
—He does pile it on.  anyone would think that he's the only one with domestic problems.

—She said she was an expert skier but I think she was just shooting a line.

—He's always sounding off about how he would manage the firm.

—He is a good player, but "world class"is stretching it.   
     他是一位优秀的选手,但是说是"世界级的"就有点言过其实了。
27. to swagger about [5swAg[ [5baut]   吹牛;说大话       
—He always swagger about his exploits to all of us.    他总是对我们吹嘘他的功绩。
28. to talk big [5tC:k bIg]    吹牛;说大话
—He talks big but doesn't actually do anything.    他光吹牛,什么实际的事都不干。

—I hate our boss, he always talks through his head.    我讨厌我们的老板, 他总是吹牛。

30. vaunt [5vC:nt] v.  (尤指因过于骄傲而)大肆吹嘘的;过分夸耀的
— People usually did't trust those who always vaunted themselves.
     人们往往不太信任那些喜欢自我吹嘘的人。

—This was not a mere empty vaunt, but a deliberate avowal of his real sentiments.   
     这倒不是一个空洞的吹牛,而是他真实感情的供状。
