斑驳字迹，信手“涂写”的神韵。在《珊瑚帖》中，字态极为奇异超迈，随意而书，神韵自然，神采更趋飞扬，形式感也更具意趣。

米字中，平捺十分伸展，从不少字中能看到如此奔放意韵。下面我们接着到著名的《苕溪诗卷》，作为米芾代表作，用笔中锋直下，浓纤兼出，落笔迅疾，纵横恣肆。

米芾行笔要求在变化中达到统一，把裹与藏、肥与瘦、疏与密、简与繁等对立因素融合起来，也就是“骨筋、皮肉、脂泽、风神俱全，犹如一佳士也”。我们看到上面的“半”和“夏”字的横划骨和肉的体现：

米芾对书法用笔有独到体会。要求“稳不俗、险不怪、老不枯、润不肥”，大概姜夔所记的“无垂不缩，无往不收”也是此意。

其结体舒畅，中宫微敛，保持了重心的平衡。

《蜀素帖》被誉为第一美帖，虽书于乌丝栏内，但气势丝毫不受局限，看到选字，率意放纵，用笔俊迈，笔势飞动，提按转折挑，曲尽变化。
