The report of “English History”
When I opened this week’s reading material, “Wow, that’s really a
long story” is my first feeling. When I finished the reading, I
found that it is a summary of what we have learned during the past
5 weeks.
Since the passage has described the English History or Culture in a
much more detailed way than mine, here I just talk about a few
aspects I am interested about.
Roman conquest of Britain:
Though Britain failed in the battle with Roman, it didn’t mean that
Britain would no longer be independent. During that time, Britain
People took great advantage of Roman to develop all aspects of
their own country and finally pitched the Roman out. So, Roman’s
invasion was a significant part for the Britain later development.
Taking this for example, there are some people saying that whether
China will be more prosperous if China was colonized by foreign
country during the nineteen century.
The English Civil War:
As the article says, it is a series of armed conflicts and
political machinations which took place between Parliamentarians
and Royalists, and it took over 10 years. 10 years, though it is a
long period in one’s life, compared with other wars in the history,
it is not a long one. So the people in the past were really fond of
fighting and most famous history things I know are related with
wars. Just as a report said, almost 10 hours of a day is under
wars, we are in the age of peace and we should cherish it.
In the end of the English Civil War, Charles was headed. This is
another comparison between ancient and today. Even though I haven’t
watched a man being headed, I can image it and feel terrible. Being
headed, that’s kind of a savage today. However, according to the
historical records and the picture shown in the class, people were
happy about Charles’ death and yelled when his head was
chopped.
Shortly after Cromwell’s death, Charles II was restored House of
Stuart King of England in 1660. In history, inheriting the throne
from father or family was very common. Once someone got the
position of King, he would try his best to have a child, especially
a son. What’s more, people at that time didn’t feel any abnormal
about the inherit thing.
Henry VIII:
He caused the Reformation because that he was not allowed to
divorce and remarried another woman. What’s more,
during his life, there were six women who had once been his wife.
It’s normal for us if he had six wives at the same time. However,
he divorced 5 times and married 6 times, that interesting and
amazing.
